A day long workshop on ‘Advanced Chemical Research for Engineering Applications’ - NMAMIT

A day long workshop on ‘Advanced Chemical Research for Engineering Applications’ was organised by the Department of Chemistry, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte on 20th of July, 2017. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Yelamaggad, Scientist from Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Research, Bengaluru and presided over by the Principal of NMAM Institute of Technology, Dr.Niranjan N Chiplunkar. Dr. C.V. Yelamaggad gave a talk on “Fluid and Doubly Refractive Gold nanoparticles: A New Class of Functional Organic-Inorganic Hybrids.” In the talk, he highlighted on the development of a new class of materials called Metamaterials which has given rise to Science of Invisibility. The basic concept is to bind liquid crystals onto gold nano particles which will have three characteristics in unison viz., (1) Surface Plasma Resonance (2) Double Refraction and (3) Fluidity. These metamaterials have a unique property of bending the incident light wave and thereby rendering the object invisible. 30 participants from the institute and from other nearby institutes had attended this workshop. Dr. Ramesh Bhat, HOD, Department of Chemistry welcomed the gathering. Dr.Aarti Bhat, Associate.Prof introduced the chief guest. Dr.Janardhan Nayak, Co-ordinator of the workshop delivered vote of thanks. Mr.Subramanya Bhat, Assistant Professor, Dept of Chemistry compered the programme.
