The SMILE TORCH, the public awareness initiative by the Indian Orthodontic Society was hosted by the Department of Orthodontics and Denfocacial Orthopaedics, A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences in Mangalore on 23rd June 2015.
The SMILE TORCH was launched in Kolkata during the National Conference in November 2014, and after travelling through the lengths and breadths of the country, it arrived in Mangalore on 22nd June 2015. The whole purpose behind the SMILE TORCH is to create awareness among the general public that there are specialist doctors for correcting crooked, malposed, forwardly placed teeth or deformities of the jaws called Orthodontists who after their B.D.S undergo an extra 3 years of rigorous specific training (M.D.S) for the same … in simple words they are the “Braces Specialists”.
As a part of this one of a kind, massive public awareness initiative on Orthodontics, a variety of programs were conducted at the institution campus, as well as, at City Centre Mall in Mangalore. The event was flagged off by the official handing over of the SMILE TORCH by the Principal and Dean of the college and Past IOS President Prof.(Dr) U.S. Krishna Nayak to the Vice Chancellor of the Nitte University Prof.(Dr) Ramananda Shetty, who was the Chief Guest for the function. He shared his vast wisdom with the dental faculty and students and said that Orthodontics has always been at the forefront of many innovations among various specialities in dentistry, and that awareness on Orthodontics is the need of the hour.
The event was also graced by the Founder Dean and Director, CADSS, Prof.(Dr) N. Sridhar Shetty, Prof.(Dr) M.S. Ravi, Prof.(Dr.)Ashutosh Shetty, Prof.(Dr) M.N. Kuttappa, and various other Heads of Departments, Staff Members and Students.
To reach out effectively to the masses, programs were conducted at the City Centre Mall, which included a Flash Mob, public awareness videos and banners, on the importance of Orthodontics and benefits of Orthodontic treatment including the changes that Orthodontic treatment can achieve. All of these events were attended by large numbers of the general public, Staff and Students of the institution, making the event a grand success!!
