News from Dr NSAM, PUC, Mangaluru | Inauguration of NSS activities

The activities of the NSS Unit for the academic year at Dr. NSAM Pre-University College were inaugurated on 23rd August 2024. Mime Ramdas, a well-known singer, actor & artist recognized for his role in the popular movie Kantara, inaugurated the event. Emphasizing the significance of school as the foundation of success, Sri. Ramdas said, “The first stage of success begins at school. The interests and skills children develop alongside their education play a crucial role in shaping their personality. Even if initial attempts on stage may fail, persistent effort ensures success. This life lesson is what the National Service Scheme imparts to students". He highlighted how NSS fosters teamwork, talent development and self-confidence among students.

Presiding over the event, Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K spoke about the transformative impact of NSS on students. "NSS empowers students to overcome stage fright and fosters personal growth. Many well-known artists, political leaders and achievers today first honed their skills in NSS camps. When NSS becomes a part of education, students can achieve remarkable things. It enhances knowledge, personality, skills and wisdom. If students, who are often distracted by mobile phones and the internet, engage in mind-enriching activities like NSS, they can contribute to building a better society," he said.

The inauguration was followed by a series of cultural performances, which added a celebratory spirit to the occasion.

News from NSAM PUC, Mangalore | Alumni day

“Participating in various social activities enhances personality development, and an Alumni Association can be an ideal platform for this growth. Alumni can maintain a lasting connection with their alma mater by organizing social, cultural, sports and intellectual events. They are vital to the growth of any institution and are its true assets. Alumni serve as ambassadors of the institution" remarked Dr. Kishore Kumar CK, President, Physical Education Department, Mangalore University, during his address as the chief guest at the inauguration of the alumni association activities of Dr. NSAM Pre-University College, Mangaluru held on 4th August 2024.

Tulu theater & film artist Mr. Aravind Bolar, attending as guest of honor, likened an educational institution to a temple, stating, "Serving one's alma mater as an alumnus is a noble act. The goddess of knowledge blesses us in many ways, and she has blessed me as an artist. The contributions of alumni are as valuable as gold," he said, inspiring the audience.

Presiding over the event, Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K emphasized, "The relationship with an institution does not end upon graduation… it is ongoing. The alumni association allows us to contribute to the institution's progress and shape the future of many young students." Ms. Veena, Alumni Coordinator, Dr. NSAM PU College outlined the vision and future plans of the Alumni Association. The newly elected committee members were then assigned responsibilities for the academic year. Mr. Prasanna Kailaje, Director (Alumni Relations), Nitte DU, provided information about the Nitte Alumni Portal, which connects alumni from across the Nitte group.




The program began with a prayer by Ms. Anisha, followed by a welcome address by Mr. Vijesh Nayak. The guests were introduced by Ms. Meera Crasta and Ms. Shruti. Vinod Kumar gave the vote of thanks, and the event was hosted by Ms. Praneetha. The event was well-attended, with all staff members and over 200 alumni were present.

News from NSAMPUC, Mangalore | Inaugural function of ‘Bale Tulu Lipi Kalpuga’

The inaugural function of ‘Bale Tulu Lipi Kalpuga’ was held on 5th September 2023 at the college to provide students a platform to learn Tulu - one of the Pancha Dravida languages. The event marked a significant step in the promotion & preservation of the Tulu language & culture, drawing attention to the rich heritage of this ancient Dravidian language. Tulu is a language with thousands of years of history and it is our duty to safeguard and promote this language.

Chief Guest of the day Mr. Naveen Shetty Edmemar, a prominent narrator & artist from Namma TV channel, emphasized the importance of Tulu language and literature. Inaugurating the Tulu script learning classes, jointly organized by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Jai Tulunadu (R) organizations, he said, "Students have numerous opportunities if they learn the Tulu language & traditions as a subject."

Dr. Naveen Shetty, Principal presided over the function. He expressed that due to the predominance of English language in schools & colleges, pure Tulu language has been forgotten. He stressed the necessity of providing opportunities for youngsters to learn, speak, read and write Tulu so that Tulu literature can flourish once more.

The guest of honor Sri Vishu Srikar, President, Jai Tulunadu (R) applauded the efforts of the trainers, Ms. Geetha, Mr. Laxmisha & Ms. Chirashree who have come forward to teach Tulu script to the students free of cost on Saturdays after class hours.

The event commenced with a prayer by Ankitha, followed by a welcome address by Ms. Shakunthala Shetty. The vote of thanks was delivered by Koushika and the program was compered by Ananya Shetty.





News from Dr. NSAM PU College Mangaluru | A program on ‘Prevention of Sexual Harassment and POCSO Law Awareness’

A program on ‘Prevention of Sexual Harassment and POCSO Law Awareness’ was held at Dr. NSAM Pre-University College, Mangaluru on 10th August 2023. It featured discussions on preventing sexual abuse and creating awareness of relevant laws.

Resource person Dr. Varsha Shetty, Asst. Professor, Forensic Medicine, KS Hegde Medical Academy emphasized that children are vulnerable to various forms of sexual harassment that include inappropriate touches, indecent jokes and abusive behaviour. The POCSO Act is designed to protect children from such abuse and awareness is crucial to prevent it. She broadened the scope of the term ‘misconduct’ highlighting that it encompasses not only physical abuse or violence, but also a range of inappropriate behaviour. These behaviours encompass everything from unwanted physical contact & gestures to offensive humour and attempts to manipulate or intimidate children through negative intentions. The POCSO Act is designed to protect children from such misconduct and awareness is crucial to prevent it. Sub-Inspector Pratibha KH of Kadri Police Station encouraged students to provide information about such incidents to the police and assured them that the law enforcement agencies are dedicated to ensuring the safety of children and will take appropriate action against any wrongdoers.

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K in his presidential address stressed the necessity of programs that aimed at preventing and addressing sexual harassment. He emphasized that such initiatives are not only essential for creating a safe and respectful learning environment but also instrumental in equipping students with the knowledge and awareness to navigate potential challenges effectively. He encouraged the involvement of authorities and educators in addressing any incidents to avoid long-term harm to students.

News from NSAMPUC, Mangaluru | Book Launching Ceremony for Competitive Examination Preparation

The books on preparation for competitive examinations such as JEE, NEET and KCET were released at an event that was held at the college on 14th July 2023.

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty, in his presidential address emphasized the significance of these books in achieving academic excellence. He said that the books were meticulously designed, covering a comprehensive range of difficulty levels and contained approximately 9000 questions in each subject. This ensured that students were adequately equipped to tackle various challenges posed by these competitive exams.

During the ceremony, several testimonials were shared by second-year students who had utilized the books with the support of the integrated scheme faculty to solve complex problems. They expressed their gratitude and admiration to the faculty for their dedication and guidance in helping them prepare for the competitive exams.

The students were also treated to the exciting display of Chandrayaan-3 launching, in the Auditorium. This spectacle symbolized the endless possibilities that awaited them in the field of science and technology and inspired them. The carefully crafted reference books, coupled with the exceptional teaching and support from the integrated faculty, instilled confidence and enthusiasm among the students.

News from NSAMPUC, Mangaluru | Career Awareness program

Career Awareness program for the 2nd year Commerce students of Dr. NSAM PU College was organized on 19th July 2023 by the Career Guidance Cell. The session was facilitated by Mr. Sanjay from The Great Knack Professional Review Private Ltd. Mangaluru.

The program commenced with a welcome address by Mrs. Shakunthala M Shetty, Career Guidance Coordinator.

Mr. Sanjay interacted with the students and emphasized the importance of skill-oriented courses. He urged the students to have a clear purpose in mind when choosing their courses, particularly in the context of the present competitive and technology-driven society and encouraged the students to develop additional qualities & skills to make themselves more employable. He also said that in the modern business landscape, companies expect their employees to have not only a degree but also additional qualifications and competencies. Mr. Sanjay particularly highlighted the value of pursuing the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) course and how it enhances employability prospects in various companies in India and on a global level.

The session included a Q & A session, which was handled by Miss Valisha, the Education Counsellor. Students had the opportunity to seek clarification on their queries related to career paths and skill development.

Dr. Naveen Shetty K, Principal emphasized the significance of attending such programs to understand potential career paths and opportunities. He appreciated the efforts of the Career Guidance Cell in organizing such events for the benefit of the students.

“One should never forget God, parents and teachers. In the olden days, people faced hardships to get themselves educated, but today’s students are fortunate to have the opportunity to study in prestigious institutions with all conveniences. Relationships need to be valued. When we integrate culture with education, we can build a better society. Dasa Sahitya, Tatvapada, Folklore, Literature and Poetry are treasure troves of knowledge. Politics should never enter education; Syllabus should be designed by academicians and when this happens students can build a great India” said Sri Bhoje Gowda, Member of the Legislative Council of the Govt of Karnataka. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Students’ Council of Nitte Dr NSAM PU College, Nanthoor, held at Ambedkar Bhavan Hall, Mangalore on 22nd July 2023. The program began with a prayer by Ananya Prabhu and team.

Chief Guest of the event Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice President, Institutional Social Responsibility and Central Research Lab, KSHEMA said, “Nitte’s educational institutions are known for quality and disciplined education. There is ample opportunity for all round personality development of the students academically, culturally and intellectually. Let the meritorious students of the past year who were honoured on this platform be an inspiration to the current students. Marks are not the only criteria in education. Life lessons and good communication skills also play an important role in personality development”.

Dr Naveen Shetty K, Principal, Dr NSAM PU College, presiding over the function said that students should play an important role in building a corruption free and civilized society. Student Council activities at the college level can play an important role in inculcating the right attitude. He advised students to work with utmost sincerity and create a culture of compassion.

Newly elected President of the Students’ Council Adithi V Shetty, Secretary Dishanth B Shetty, Representative of the Fine Arts Unit, Anushka S Shetty, Sports Representative Vihas, NSS representative Ankitha and other elected office bearers under the leadership of the Principal pledged to abide by their duties with integrity.

In the last State level examination, Pranitha R from Commerce section who secured 589 marks & ranked 9th; Sudeep Rai & Shifa Banu with 588 marks and ranked 10th; Sweedal Roha and Harshith from Science section with 585 and 576 marks respectively were honoured for their achievements along with other academically meritorious students. The institution`s annual special issue ‘ViVidha’ was also released on this occasion.

Rakshith Suvarna, Youth Leader, JDS and Gopinath Hegde, President, Popular Educational Institution Bajpe, were present.

Ms Geetha welcomed the gathering; Ms Shakunthala and Ms Shilpa introduced the guests; Dishanth Shetty delivered the vote of thanks and Ms Shruthi compered the program.









News from Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru | Mind Magic Program

Mind Magic Program organized by the NSS unit at Dr. NSAM PU College on 21st July 2023 aimed at exploring the potential of the subconscious mind.

Renowned magician Kudroli Ganesh was the resource person. Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K in his presidential address emphasized the significance of exploring the power of the subconscious mind to enhance personal growth and academic success. He highlighted that the subconscious mind is continuously at work, even when we are not consciously aware of it. Distinguishing the subconscious mind from the conscious mind, he explained that the conscious mind is that which handles immediate tasks, critical thinking and decision making. In contrast, the subconscious mind operates beneath the surface, handling tasks that do not require conscious attention. He emphasized that dwelling into this hidden activity of the mind could lead to enhanced learning, memory retention and creativity.

Mr. Kudroli enlightened the students on the fascinating subject of activating the subconscious mind. He emphasized the importance of reading aloud as a technique to enhance memory retention and recall as we tend to engage more senses which creates a stronger imprint on our subconscious, leading to better memory retrieval.

The highlight of the event was the demonstration of mind reading and telepathy performed by Kudroli Ganesh himself. The audience were spellbound as he seemed to connect with their thoughts and reveal them. These mind-boggling displays left everyone wondering about the untapped capabilities of the human mind. He also showcased a technique to recall lengthy lists effortlessly. By associating each item with a unique story or mental image, he showed how we could create a chain of memories, making it easier to remember and recall the entire list. The students were thrilled to learn this practical memory -enhancing technique, which would be useful in their academic and personal lives. The event left the audience with valuable insights into the potential of their subconscious minds. Magician Kudroli Ganesh's expertise in unlocking the mysteries of the human mind made the event unforgettable.

The Orientation program for I PUC students of Dr. NSAM PU College was conducted at KS Hegde Auditorium, Deralakatte. Prof. Dr. Shantharam Shetty, Pro-chancellor, Nitte University was the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he said “Follow the ideals of good people and make success your own, by being a good human being. The fact that increased number of students are joining Nitte institutions shows the growing confidence parents have, in our organization. The Nitte group has established 43 institutions in Mangaluru, Bengaluru and Nitte, accommodating over 25,000 students in various fields”. Principal Dr Naveen Shetty K., emphasized the importance of striving for excellence in academics. He urged the students to develop a disciplined mindset, which is essential for a successful life. The path to success is to adapt to change and put in your best efforts. In an increasingly competitive world, student’s responsibility has increased at a young age. He also said that inspiration and feedback from the outgoing students has resulted in increase in inflow of students this year. The guest of honor, Dr Jayaprakash Shetty, Vice-Dean, KSHEMA advised the students to focus on achieving high grades. Lunch was served to all the parents, students and staff members.





News from NSAMPUC, Mangaluru | 9th International Yoga Day Celebration

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K, presiding over the International Yoga Day program organized by the NSS unit of Dr NSAM PU College Mangalore unit on 21st June 2023 said, "Yoga is capable of eliminating negative thoughts from the mind. We should all take pride in considering yoga as India's contribution to the world. When people from all walks of life embrace yoga without considering caste, religion, gender or age, a blissful life is assured. Through yoga, the integration of the body and mind is possible. Regular yoga practice enables students to achieve concentration. Along with physical well-being, it also brings mental peace. Moreover, yoga can eliminate negative emotions such as hatred from the mind”. Mr. Y. Prasad Kulal, Yoga Instructor from Patanjali Yoga Shikshana Samithi, Mangalore was the chief guest. He emphasized the significance of yoga in leading a joyful and stress-free life and urged students to make yoga a part of their daily routine. He also informed the audience, the various yoga asanas and their benefits. Students & staff members actively participated in the program and demonstrated different yoga postures. The program was coordinated By Mrs. Sandhya, NSS Officer and Mr. Venkat Giri, Lecturer in Kannada.

News from NSAMPUC, Mangalore | Eye donation camp

The NSS Unit of Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru organized an eye donation camp at the college auditorium on 18th February 2023. The chief guest of the event was Dr. Akshay Bhandary, Medical Officer at AJ Medical College, Mangaluru.

Dr. Akshay emphasized the significance of eye donation in restoring vision to the visually impaired. He explained that a single cornea could be used to restore vision of two people. He further stated that it was not possible to sell or purchase eyes in India, and eye donation could be made only by living donors. He also highlighted that people could enroll online for eye donation, which would make it easier for hospitals to identify potential donors. He added that no hospital would reject an eye donation, and it was a simple and painless procedure that takes only few minutes. During the event, it was also revealed that in India, there are currently 13 million blind people.

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K in his presidential address, spoke about the value of human life and emphasized that one should strive to give light to others, after one’s death. He stated that after death, our eyes usually go to waste. By donating them to those in need would give a new lease of life to the blind. He urged the audience to come forward and pledge their eyes for donation after death. Many students and staff came forward to donate their eyes and by doing so, they spread awareness about eye donation.

The program was coordinated by Mrs. Sandhya, NSS Officer and the NSS volunteers.



News from NSAMPUC, Mangalore | Jan Dhan Yojana

A seminar on Jan Dhan Yojana was organized by the NSS unit of Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru on 4th March 2023 at the college auditorium to provide detailed information to the students about the scheme, its benefits etc. The resource person was Mr. Latheesh, Consultant, Center for Economic Literacy, Mangaluru.

The seminar was inaugurated by Mrs. Latha Basavaraju, Enrollment Manager, State Bank of India, Mangaluru Regional Business Office. She informed the gathering that Jan Dhan Yojana is a financial inclusion scheme launched by the Prime Minister of India, Sri Narendra Modi on 28th August 2014 to provide every household in India with access to basic banking services, including a bank account, debit card and insurance. There is no requirement of maintaining a minimum deposit. The aim is to ensure that every common citizen has basic banking knowledge, thus contributing to his own progress and that of the nation too.

The key note speaker Mr. Latheesh explained that under the Jan Dhan Yojana, college students can open a bank account with zero balance and zero cost. “This has made it easier for students to access banking services, especially those from low-income groups who may not have been able to afford traditional banking services. Students can now receive subsidies directly into their bank accounts, making it easier for them to manage their finances”, he said.

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K in his presidential address said that the seminar has provided the students with sufficient banking information, which will help them manage their finances better.

On this occasion, the amount collected by NSS students was handed over in the form of financial assistance to the father of a student who was suffering from illness. All the staff members and NSS student volunteers were present on the occasion.

The inauguration of the NSS Special Camp by Mr. Parameshwar Hegde, Asst. Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru was held on 22nd December 2022 at Lions Ashoka Seva Bhavan, Kadri, Mangaluru. Addressing the students, he said “NSS camps help the personality development of students. Moral values along with education pave the path for all decisions in life. Make social service the mission of your life”. He also entertained the students with a song. 

The chief guest of the function, Mr. Ramesh C J, State NSS Planning Officer in his address said “Today's education is turning students into mere mark scoring machines and nurturing them to take charge of their career path in employment or entrepreneurship. Along with education, humility is also needed. Cultivation of human values should be a part of the education system”. Ms. Savitha Yermal, NSS Divisional Officer, Mangaluru inaugurating `Shramadana’ , said `lessons of life are far more significant as compared to lessons from books’. Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K in his presidential address, said that “One should live life not only for oneself but also for others and the very act of giving back to the community boosts happiness, health and sense of well-being”. Mr. Gopinath Hegde, Correspondent, Bajpe Popular School, Ms. Kusuma U Rao, President, Ashok Nagar Lions Charitable Trust, Mr. Vasanth Shetty, Secretary, Ashok Nagar Lions Charitable Trust and staff members of NSAM PU college were present on the occasion. News from Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru | Inauguration of Red Cross Unit

The inauguration of the Red Cross unit at Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru was held on 22nd December 2022. Chief guest CA Shantharam Shetty, President, DK District Red Cross addressing the gathering said “Health is the biggest wealth. We should be aware of this and take care of our health. The importance of activities like blood donation and lifesaving will be learnt from Red Cross programs. There is nothing greater than humanity and caring for others as well as ourselves”. 

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K in his presidential address said “as responsible citizens of the country, our first duty is to help the people in trouble”. Later Dr. Pawan Kumar, Asst.Professor, KSHEMA, Deralakatte guided the students on first aid. 

Ms. Meera Crasta, Mr. Vidyadhar Takoor, Red Cross Office Bearer, students & staff members were present on the occasion. Ms. Shaza was the Master of Ceremony and Guru Krishna rendered the vote of thanks.

News from Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru | The Annual Sports Day

The Annual Sports Day of Dr. NSAM PU College, Nanthoor was held on 19th November 2022 at Nitte Grounds, Deralakatte. The program began with an impressive and well synchronized march-past by the students to the rhythm of the band. 

Dr. Harsha Halahalli, Registrar, Nitte DU inaugurated the sports meet by lighting the ceremonial torch. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Harsha said that sports play an integral role in the all-round development of students and helps to develop leadership skills, competitive spirit and also adapt to situations. He further added that Nitte encourages students who excel in sports. 

Chief guest, Dr. Murali Krishna V, Sports Advisor, Nitte DU said that students are the country’s wealth. Healthy youth can build a strong nation and this is possible through sports, as it keeps students healthy, fit and disciplined. He urged students to make sports a part of their daily routine. 

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty in his presidential remarks said “Education is not only about academics. It should have a curriculum that provides for all-round development of the student. Sports teaches the life lesson that today's loser can win tomorrow”. 

The athletic events comprised both track events and field events such as shot-put, discus throw, long jump and Kabaddi. Prizes were distributed to the winners by the Principal and other lecturers. 

Physical Director Mr. Vidyadhar Takoor welcomed the gathering. Student Sports Secretary Ms. Shamitha delivered the vote of thanks. Guest of Honor, Mr. Vijesh Naik, President of Alumni Association and staff members were present on the occasion.

The inaugural ceremony of Alumni Day 2022 of Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru was held at the college premises on 6th November, 2022. The chief guest for the occasion was Mr. Walter Nandalike, Editor-in-chief & Managing Director, Daijiworld Media. 

Addressing the gathering Mr. Nandalike said, “The credit for our achievements should go to the institution that provided us education and nurtured us. Alma mater is that place which launches us to a whole new world of self-discovery. No matter how successful we are, we should never forget the organization that educated us. The blessings of our teachers will protect us in our life’s journey. Nitte is a beacon for millions of students who are fortunate to be part of such a prestigious group”. He further emphasized that Alumni Association should conduct regular activities to complement the progress of their alma mater. 

Guest of honor Ms. Roopa Varkady, Cine Artist, Tulu & Kannada Film Industry informed that people recognize her today because she is an artist and she owes this to her alma mater. 

Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty in his presidential address said that the role of alumni is very important in the progress of an institution. One should not forget the school / college which has played a vital role in shaping one’s future and added that regular alumni meets help in building a strong bond.

Mr. Vijesh Naik, President (1998-2000 batch), Mr. Vinod Kumar, Secretary (2013-15 batch) and elected committee members of the Alumni Association 2022-23 were delegated responsibility by the chief guest and other dignitaries. 

Mr. Prasanna Kailaje, Director (Student Welfare & Alumni Relations), Nitte DU, informed the alumni about the Nitte Alumni Portal which connects all the alumni of Nitte group. 

Notable alumni of Dr. NSAM PU college - Mr. Anvith Shetty, Actor & Model, Mr. Karnataka & Mr. Dakshina Kannada award winner who also excelled in National Level Volleyball & Throwball tournaments; Mr. Pranesh, Artiste who made his name in the world of music by composing songs; Ms. Veekshitha who won the first place in Karate and Relay at National Level Competitions; Mr. Drisheeth and Mr. Karthik who have been recognized and won awards at National Level under the category of short films & drama; Mr. Deviprasad who won the silver medal at National Level Volleyball Tournament; Mr. Jnanesh who developed the “Genesiri” app which translates Kannada & Malayalam languages to Tulu language and Mr. Kiran Kumar former President of Alumni Association were honored for their achievements. 

The gathering was welcomed by Mr. Vijesh Naik; Ms. Shamitha rendered the prayer song; Mr. Kiran introduced the guest; Mr. Vinod Kumar delivered the vote of thanks and Mr. Rajath Shetty coordinated the program. All the staff members and over 200 alumni, including the first batch of 1998 were present.
