The NSS unit of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences organized a NSS special camp at D.K Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School at Madoor from 11th to 17th October 2018. The camp was inaugurated by Dr. M. S Moodithaya , Pro Vice-Chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University). Addressing the students, he explained the importance of NSS and the responsibilities of the students and volunteers towards society. Sri Uday Kumar, President, Kotekar Pattana Panchayat was the Chief guest of the function. The valedictory program of the camp was held on 17th October at 10.30 am at Madoor School. Dr. Sathish Rao, Head, Dept. of Psychiatry, Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital was the chief guest. Mrs. Poornakala Y.K, PDO Kotekar Pattana Panchayat congratulated the students for their selfless work. Prof. Dr. Fatima D’Silva, Principal, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences presided over the program. On this occasion, Prof. Sabitha Nayak, Vice Principal, NUINS, Dr. Sumalatha R Shetty, NSS Program Co-ordinator of Nitte University, Mr. Anil, Vice-President, Kotekar Pattana Panchyat, Mrs. Sheela Gatti, SDMC Vice-President, Mrs. Cleeta Pinto and Mrs Suchithra BS, NSS Program officers NUINS, were present. The camp saw active participation by 50 NSS volunteers and two teachers. Following activities were carried out during the camp:
- Door to door awareness campaign on Swachhata :The student volunteers met with 1548 people from 385 families of Madoor village and educated the families about the importance of keeping their surroundings clean and green and also practicing healthy and hygienic habits.
- Shramadaan and cleaning: As an extension of the Govt. of India Swachhata Abhiyaan, the volunteers carried out cleaning service at the Madoor school campus, Anganwadi, roadside and bus stand at Madoor Junction. About 5 varieties of vegetable seeds (cucumber, pumpkin, ladies finger, brinjal and long beans) and about 15 flower plants were planted in the school garden and the school premise.
- Health awareness program: Health awareness talks on most relevant topics such as DM, Hypertension, Breast and cervical Cancer, Nutrition, healthy life style and Vector borne disease were delivered.
- DM, Hypertension screening camp: Screening camp for DM and Hypertension was organised. 51 people benefited from the camp. 10% had hypertension, 18% of them had GRBS more than 140. These people were referred to Justice K.S.Hegde Charitable Hospital for further treatment.
- Anganwadi program: Anganwadi program on hygiene was organized. Nine students were present along with parents.
