NUCSER conducted a unique one-day workshop on “Biotechnology in one health” for pre-university students on 9th January 2019. The program was sponsored by “The Biotech Research Society, India” BRSI, (www.brsi.in) under the scheme “Biotechnology Popularization and Skill Development” for college students.
In recent years, Biotechnology has become essential for the study of biological science through various tools to diagnose, treat and prevent diseases in humans, animals and plants, to ensure the safety of food from pathogenic microbes, adulterants, chemicals, pesticides and to address environmental pollution issues such as solid waste management, water and air purification etc.
The workshop was inaugurated through a formal program in the morning. Prof. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty, Deputy Director, NUCSER, welcomed the guests and the participants of the workshop. The chief guest, Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice Chancellor, Nitte DU addressed the young minds and highlighted the importance of biotechnology in today’s context. The guest of honor, Prof. Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, Senior Director (International Relations), emphasized the concept of “one-health” and how biotechnology plays a major role in it. Prof. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Director, NUCSER delivered the presidential remarks and spoke on the need for skill development as essential factors in overall development of a nation. Dr. Biswajit Maiti, the convener of the program, proposed the vote of thanks.
During the workshop, the students were introduced to the applications of biotechnology in the field of infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, plant science, environmental health and toxicology, food processing and microbial safety. Besides informative lecture sessions, live demonstrations on various biotech techniques and different model systems like zebrafish and drosophila were conducted by the research scientists of NUCSER. A quiz was conducted at the end of the workshop and the winners were rewarded with cash prizes.
Students from various pre-university colleges in and around Mangalore, including Sri Chaitanya PU College, Boscoss PU College, St. Agnes PU College, Sharada PU College, Dr. NSAM PU College, St. Aloysius PU College and Government PU College, Sullia participated in the program.
