Press release | K S Hegde hospital | Complex cardiac procedure

56 year old male patient from Haveri with severe breathing difficulty of sudden onset was evaluated by the Cardiologists and diagnosed to have multiple heart problems which included coronary artery disease, ventricular septal rupture post myocardial infarction, huge left ventricular aneurysm, severe mitral regurgitation, severe left ventricular dysfunction. His heart was functioning only 20% of normal. This is a complex condition requiring an urgent surgical procedures to rectify them. A team led by Cardiac Surgeons Dr. M Gopalakrishnan and Dr. Nareshchand Hegde H and Cardiac Anaesthesiologist Dr.Manjunath Kamath performed a major high risk cardiac surgery involving combined Surgical Ventricular Restoration (SVR), mitral valve repair, Ventricular Septal Defect repair and Bypass graft. Intensive post operative care was managed by the same team along with the Intensivist Dr. Naresh Rai after which, the patient recovered well and is discharged in stable condition. Such complex procedures are rarely attempted since they carry a very high mortality of 70%. This is one of the first such surgeries successfully undertaken in this part of the country. Medical Superintendent Major (Dr) Shivakumar Hiremath added that this hospital is well equipped with a comprehensive cardiac care unit including cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anaesthesiologists, intensivists, perfusionists and well experienced nursing staff to handle such complicated cases.
