News from ABSMIDS | Continuing Dental Education Program - Giving hope to cope: Unmasking Autism

The Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry in association with the Dental Education Unit, conducted a Continuing Dental Education Program - Giving hope to cope: Unmasking Autism on 21st April 2023.

Prof. (Dr.) Manju R, Head, Dept. of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, delivered the welcome address followed by the presidential address by Principal & Dean Prof. (Dr.) U.S Krishna Nayak.

Prof. (Dr.) Kavita Rai introduced the Resource person Dr. Akhila Nagaraj, Developmental Paediatrician, Bangalore. The inauguration ceremony began with an invocation song by Dr. Nidhish Krishna, Postgraduate student followed by the lighting of the lamp. Dr. Krithika Shetty, Sr. Lecturer in the Department was the Master of ceremony. Prof. (Dr.) Srikala Bhandary delivered the vote of thanks.

A national level competition for the students was organized by the department along with Federation of Special Care Dentistry (FSCD) to commemorate the World Autism Awareness Day (2nd April). 150+ registrations from dental colleges all over India were received. Reel making competition for postgraduates, Logo designing and oral health awareness talk competitions for the undergraduates were held. The participants were evaluated by a panel of judges and cash prizes were awarded to the winners.

Prof. Dr. Kavita Rai gave a lecture on “Challenges and unmet needs in Children with autism” during Session 1. This was followed by 4 lecture series delivered by the resource person, Dr. Akhila Nagaraj.

Lecture 1: How to identify autism / Red Flags.
Lecture 2: Pre-Visit strategies and preparing the dental team
Lecture 3: Therapies used: a) ABA b) Sensory integration c) Visual schedules & Social Stories
Lecture 4: Preventive care and Role of parents, pediatric dentist and pediatrician












Post lunch the session started with a Quiz competition. The participants were divided into 4 groups and were shown 4 recorded video presentations of children with autism having pediatric dental issues. This was followed by a group discussion & presentation by each of the 4 groups regarding management strategies for these cases, followed by “Ask the Expert" session which covered each case in detail.

The Continuing Dental Education program concluded with the valedictory function.
