The awareness initiative, conducted on 20th January 2025 at Vimshathi Bhavan, ABSMIDS as part of the regular educational programs by the Block Education Office (Mangalore South) in collaboration with N-SPECC and AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, aimed to educate children and caregivers on the detrimental effects of prolonged mobile phone usage.
By partnering with the Departments of Psychiatry and Ophthalmology at KSHEMA, the program addressed the threefold impact of excessive screen time on vision, oral health and mental well-being, particularly among children with special health care needs.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Latha Reddy Sujith, Orthodontist & alumna (1985 batch) with Dr. Mithra N. Hegde, Principal, ABSMIDS presiding over the program alongside distinguished guests, including experts in Psychology and Ophthalmology. With an audience of 125 participants, including 100 children with special needs and their parents, the session featured insightful discussions led by resource persons on the risks associated with excessive mobile usage and practical strategies to mitigate them.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Mrs. Kishori, BEO Coordinator. Key speakers, including Dr. Subrahmanya Bhat on vision care, Dr. Sindhu K.S on mental health, and Dr. Amarshree A Shetty on oral health, provided valuable guidance on preventive measures. The program emphasized reducing screen exposure, ensuring proper posture, and maintaining good visual, oral and mental health.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Amarshree Shetty. Mrs. Cynthia D’Souza (Special Educator, N-SPECC) and Mrs. Shanti D’Souza (N-SPECC Coordinator), played a key role in organizing the programme.
