RARE SURGERY DONE IN KSHEMA

A 20 year old lady from Kundapur was diagnosed to have congenital heart disease since the age of one. She was suffering from severe breathing difficulty for the last 1 year. Her echocardiogram revealed a large VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect), severe MR. This means there is an abnormal connection between the right and left ventricles. Also there is severe leakage in her left atrio ventricular valve. She was having severe pulmonary hypertension that is very high pressures in her circulation to the lungs. If left untreated she would have gone into an inoperable state in few months.
She was operated on 24th October 2013 with the help of Heart lung machine and all the defects were corrected. She had a patch closure of her VSD and mitral valve replacement with a tilting disc valve. The valve was beyond repair. Hence it was replaced. She was off the breathing machine by next day early morning. She had a smooth recovery and is ready for discharge from the hospital.
The patient was treated by the team of doctors led by Dr. Mundayat Gopalakrishnan, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, and includes Dr. Amith Kiran, Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. Manjunath Kamath, Cardiac anaesthetist, Dr. Krishna Prasad, Cardiac anaesthetist and Dr. Anil Kumar. She was diagnosed by Dr. K Subramanyam, Chief Cardiologist, KSHEMA.
Even this rare but dangerous cardiac condition could be treated promptly by such excellent team work of Cardiac Surgery, O.T. staffs, ICU staffs, anesthetic assistants. This type of operation is performed rarely in any major cardiac centres in any part of the world.
