Vibrios in "One Health" - NUSCER

An international workshop will be held at NCSER on 12 January 2018. The workshop is a part of the ongoing research on Stress Management Strategies in Aquatic systems between Nitte-Deemed to be University and Ghent University under the framework of Indo-Belgian Research and Technology Cooperation. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Director R & D, Nitte-Deemed to be University, is the Indian coordinator for this project and Dr. Peter Bossier, Director, Lab of Aquaculture and Artemia Reference Centre, Ghent University is the Belgian counterpart. The theme of the workshop is "Vibrios in One Health". Vibrios are highly diverse aquatic bacteria and the disease cholera caused by certain strains of Vibrio cholerae has been dreaded because of its pandemic capabilities. Apart from the disease cholera, Vibrios are also involved in gastroenteritis and septicemia in humans. A host of Vibrio spp are pathogens for aquatic fish and invertebrates too, thus making them important in the field of aquaculture. Vibrios, being chitinoclastic organisms have a major role in the bio-geocycling, since chitin is the most abundant polymer in the oceans that cover about three quarters of the surface of the earth. International Experts from Belgium, Sweden, UK, and Sri Lanka and scientists from the host institutes will deliver talks on various topics related to the problems of vibriosis and its implications on human, animal and environmental health in this one day workshop. Faculty members and Students working in the field of medical, animal or environmental microbiology can register for the event through email and/or through spot entries.
