Media Conference and Cartoon Exhibition concludes at Nitte Institute of Communication - NICO

The two-day conference on Media, Content and Consciousness: Exploring the Collective and the Individual held on November 16-17 at Nitte Institute of Communication ended with a panel discussion comprising of social scientist Shiv Visvanathan, former Outlook magazine editor-in-chief, Mr Krishna Prasad, National-Award winning film critic Prof N Manu Chakravarthy and social activist Prof K Phaniraj. The discussion was moderated by Gandhian scholar Prof Varadesh Hiregange.

A cartoon workshop by internationally acclaimed artist Satish Acharya was also conducted in the premises of the Institution, which also saw a public exhibition of over 100 of his best works. This exhibition, free to the public and on display for two days, was inaugurated on November 16 by Vice Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be) University, Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary.

The conference was inaugurated by Shiv Visvanathan, who also delivered the keynote address. He spoke about changes in the Indian media landscape, and analysed the usage of media by political parties. “ Digitalisation is changing our lives so rapidly to an extent that it has changed the novelty of India,” he said. Commenting on how most stories don’t appear on the media, he argued that “the creation of the Indian state and incidents like partition have damaged the orality in the country. We have developed contempt for orality and it has become a concept all about memory.”

The conference also saw talks by the distinguished speakers on several important issues pertaining to the media such as Text and Public Memory, Media and the Marginalised, Media and Development, and Mainstream and Alternative Media. Students and academicians from diverse disciplines and from various parts of the country attended the sessions and contributed to the perspectives of the discussion.
