INTERNATIONAL WORLD DISABILITY DAY 3rd December 2018 - ABSMIDS

Around 15% of the world population comprises of differently abled people. The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. This year’s theme focused on empowering persons with disabilities for an inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda pledges to “leave no one behind”. The dental hygiene of children, is often neglected so they are at increased risk of oral health problems like teeth cavities and gum diseases.

N-SPECC is Nitte - Special Child Care project initiated by Nitte (Deemed to be University) in association with Sarva Shikshana Abhiyana with a vision to provide the best of multidisciplinary health care to children with special health care needs; wherein basic medical and dental needs of such children are met free of cost.

Nitte University in collaboration with Special Olympics Bharat; Karnataka Bank Ltd., and Sarva Shikshana Abhiyana, Mangalore South Zone, Government of Karnataka, celebrated International Day for differently abled children on 3rd December 2018. This year, N-SPECC (Nitte-Special Child Care Program) collaborated with 'Special Olympics Bharat' and 125 special children, their parents and instructors were chosen from various south Karnataka centers to take part in the program.

After breakfast, the program began with very informative health talks by Dr. Reshma N.S from the Department of Psychiatry and Mr. Sharath from Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy. This was followed by a skit performed by the first year post graduate students. The hardships that an autistic child faces and the difficulties the parents go through, were depicted in the form of a play. The play focused on how with the right guidance every child has the scope to bloom and how it is our responsibility to tap their talents. After the inspiring talks and skit, a detailed annual report of the year 2018 was presented by the Secretary, Dr. Amarshree Shetty.

The program was inaugurated by watering the plant and lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries present – Pro-Chancellor, Mr. Vishal Hegde; Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary; Vice Dean (Academics), Prof. Amrit M. Mirajkar; Medical Superintendent, Major (Dr.) Shivakumar Hiremath; DYPC. Mr. Mahadeva S.P; B.E.O of Mangaluru South zone, Mr. S.R. Lokesh; Block Co-ordinator of Manglore South Zone Dr. Prashant K. S; President of N-SPECC, Dr. Amitha M. Hegde; Principal & Dean ABSMIDS, Prof. (Dr.) U.S. Krishna Nayak and Secretary of N-SPECC; Dr. Amarshree Shetty.

Speaking on the occasion, the Pro-Chancellor of Nitte University and the Guest of honor, Mr. Vishal Hegde said that it was the responsibility of every individual to be considerate and caring towards the physically challenged and participate in activities that empower and create equal opportunities for them. He also congratulated N-SPECC for its contribution in helping the less privileged and also its efforts towards sensitizing the society.

On the 1st of December, a sports competition was held for these children and prizes were distributed to the winners as a part of the function. In the spirit of the event and in wanting to help the children, the chief sponsor, Karnataka Bank donated 4 wheel chairs and 2 walkers to the differently abled children. Krithika, Mohammad Tahir, Mohammad Nahim, Mohammad Raiz, Suhebathulla Aslamia and Alimath Thaslima received these aids. This generosity of the Bank will change these children’s lives for the better. This was followed by lunch.

The program concluded with amazing performances and cultural activities by children, including singing and fancy dress. It was extremely heartwarming to see the kids participate with great enthusiasm.
