World No-Tobacco Day - ABSMIDS

AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences conducted various programs on 31st May 2019 to commemorate the “World No-Tobacco Day” and enlighten the public regarding the ill effects of tobacco.

AWARENESS PROGRAM ON THE ILL EFFECTS OF TOBACCO AT ALL INDIA RADIO (AIR) A program on the ill effects of tobacco was aired on All India Radio, Mangaluru on 31st May 2019. Dr. Audrey M D’cruz, Head, Department of Public Health Dentistry was the resource person.

FREE ORAL CANCER SCREENING AND COUNSELLING PROGRAM The Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology in association with the Public Health Dentistry Department organised a Free Oral Cancer Screening & Counselling Program for Tobacco Cessation from 31st May to 15th June 2019 at the college premises. Prof. (Dr.) U.S. Krishna Nayak, Principal & Dean spoke about the ill effects of various deleterious habits, with special emphasis on tobacco related diseases and the need to create awareness among the public regarding oral cancer. Later, Mr. Ruben Liu, Intern spoke about the various forms of tobacco and their effects on general and oral health. Mr. Sai Samrat, Intern spoke about the treatment options available for individuals who wish to quit the use of tobacco. Various posters and models describing the ill effects of tobacco use were displayed for patient education and motivation. Screening for oral cancer was then conducted in the Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology. Patients were educated on the effects of adverse habits and the need to maintain good oral health. Preventive measures for oral cancer were initiated for patients with oral lesions.





Guest lecture on tobacco cessation at family meet


The Department of Psychiatry, K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital in collaboration with the NSS unit commemorated World No-Tobacco Day on the theme “Tobacco and Lung Health”. On this occasion, guest Lectures were organised for the families of alcohol de-addiction inmates. Dr. Sahana Maben, Tutor and Clinical Co-ordinator from the Department of Public Health Dentistry, ABSMIDS delivered a lecture on “Prevention and Management of Tobacco”.



Oral cancer screening camp at New Mangalore port

The Department of Public Health Dentistry in association with the New Mangalore Port Trust commemorated the World No-Tobacco Day by conducting a free Oral Cancer and Dental Screening Camp at the New Mangalore Port, Panambur, Mangalore on 31.05.2019. The inaugural function commenced at 11.30 am. Shri. Y.R. Belagal, Traffic Manager; Chief Medical Officer Dr. Srinivasulu; Sr. Dy. Traffic Manager Shri. Nownith Kumar; Dy. Traffic Manager Shri. Sathish Kumar; Asst. Director, Inspectorate of Dock Safety Shri. Milind Barhate and Dy. Traffic Manager Shri Pramod Kumar Das of NMPT inaugurated the program and graced the occasion. Dr. Shilpa. M, Sr. Lecturer from the Dept. of Public Health Dentistry delivered a health talk describing the ill effects of tobacco to the employees of NMPT, comprising of dock workers and drivers. Ms. Sushma from the HR department of NMPT and Dr. Bless, Tutor, Dept. of Public Health Dentistry, ABSMIDS were present.

A street play on Tobacco and its ill effects was performed by the III BDS students. About 430 patients benefitted from the camp and underwent screening for oral cancer.





Live tv progam on daiji world
A one-hour Live TV program was telecast on Daiji World from 6 pm to 7 pm to create an awareness amongst the public on self examination of oral cavity, ill effects of tobacco, different types of Oral Cancer and preventive & treatment measures for the same. Dr. Supriya Bhat, Sr. Lecturer, Dept. of Oral Medicine & Radiology was the resource person.
