National Service Scheme (N.S.S) Cell of Nitte (Deemed to be University) organised a week-long 'NSS National Integration Camp' in collaboration with the State NSS Cell, GoK, Bengaluru and NSS Regional Directorate, Govt. of India, Bengaluru from 7th to 13th January 2020 at K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, Deralakatte.
A total of 124 volunteers and 26 Program Officers from across the country ranging from Uttarakhand, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka participated in the camp to study, discover and transform themselves. The seven-day long residential camp aimed to provide youth from diverse cultural backgrounds, a common platform to interact with each other.
Day 1: 7th January 2020
The NSS National Integration Camp (NIC) was inaugurated by hoisting the NSS flag on Tuesday, 7th January at K.S. Hegde Auditorium, Deralakatte followed by the lamp lighting ceremony.
Dr. G. Kalpana, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Dept. of Youth Empowerment & Sports, Govt. of Karnataka, was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Speaking on the importance of NSS, she said, “NSS instils an understanding of the society we live in. It enhances our organizational competence and helps us gain confidence and character as an individual.” Addressing the volunteers, she said, “NSS is the platform to score marks in your life; to find your inner merits, to become the best you that you can possibly be.”
The Guest of Honour, Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice-Chancellor, Nitte DU in his speech, said, “National Integration Camp is imperative for our young volunteers in the present day when our nation is faced with serious challenges. It provides a platform to mingle, communicate and interact with the co-volunteers and graduate with wisdom.”
The Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University), Sri. N. Vinaya Hegde, in his presidential address, said, “Community service is larger than the University degree. The greatest satisfaction is realised through community service and NSS provides a platform for it.” He added, “Education system is the hall mark of discipline. NSS provides larger exposure to discipline.”
Dr. Gananath Shetty Yekkar, State NSS Liaison Officer & Ex-Officio Joint Secretary, GoK was the Guest of Honour. Prof. Dr. Alka Kulkarni, Registrar, Nitte DU and Prof. Dr. Sumalatha R Shetty, NSS Coordinator, Nitte DU were present on this occasion.
In the afternoon, the volunteers attended a talk on ‘Dental Hygiene Practices’ by Dr. Kumuda Rao and Dr. Avaneendra Talwar, A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences and a Workshop on ‘Videography and Photography’ by Prof. Raviraj, Head, Nitte Institute of Communication.
The volunteers and program officers were hosted at the Nitte Education International at Mahaveera Circle, Mangaluru. The morning sessions commenced with Yoga classes conducted by Mrs. Rashmitha, Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy. This enhanced their knowledge on yoga and also proved to be of immense help in keeping them fresh through the day. The NSS volunteers and program officers were divided into 6 groups: Sneha, Samrudhi, Shanthi, Sahana, Sahaya and Satya. Each group was given different duties on each day - cleaning, flag hoisting, serving, cultural activities, transport. Morning breakfast and evening dinner was planned at the camp site under the able guidance of Mr. Pradeep. Every evening, the volunteers planned and executed cultural events as per group allotment. At the end of the cultural event, a member was asked to read the report of the day to summarise the day’s activities. The campers who were up by 5:30 am were directed to go to bed by 10:30 pm and be ready for the next day’s activities.
Day 2: 8th January 2020
The day started with Yoga classes conducted by Mrs. Rashmitha, Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy. Dr Jayaprakash Shetty, Vice Dean, K S Hegde Medical Academy was the Chief Guest for the NSS flag hoisting. This was followed by breakfast at the camp site. The day began with a session on ‘First Aid & Basic Life Skill Training’. This training taught the right methods of administering assistance in times of emergency. The afternoon session was a talk on ‘Gender Sensitization & Women Empowerment’ by Prof. Dr. Sathish Rao, Head, Dept. of Psychiatry, KSHEMA and a workshop on ‘Environmental Architecture’ by Ar. Sweatha Pradhan, NIA. Dr. Smitha Hegde, NUCSER spoke about the initiatives taken by Nitte DU to make the campus eco-friendly.
The day ended with cultural programs enacted by the volunteers, followed by the day’s report reading and dinner.
Day 3: 9th January 2020
On the third day, after the morning routine of Yoga, the NSS Flag was hoisted by the Guest of Honour, Ar. Vinod Aranha, Director, Nitte Institute of Architecture. After breakfast, the volunteers started their campaign of Swachh Bharath by contacting the villagers of Kotekar Panchayat. A survey was conducted to know the waste segregation facilities in the houses of the villagers. The volunteers divided themselves into sub groups covering six wards – Kotekar (Ward 1), Kaneeru Thota (Ward 2), Maduru (Ward 3), Madyaru (Ward 4) and Bagambila School (Wards 5 & 6) with each group being moderated by Grama Panchayat representatives. The volunteers along with Asha workers attempted to create awareness on Pipe Composting to reduce wet waste which could be used as manure. Lunch was followed by a Self Defence workshop by Mr. Ganesh K, Institute of Karate & Allied Arts (Artist, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy). Keeping in view the rising stress and its ill effect on the youth, a talk on ‘Stress Management in Youth’ was delivered by Dr. Santosh Prabhu, Dept. of Psychiatry, KSHEMA.
Day 4: 10th January 2020
The Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Alka Kulkarni, Registrar, Nitte DU hoisted the NSS flag. The volunteers visited the Ramakrishna Math and enjoyed the spiritual atmosphere of the Math. They exchanged their ideas with the members and volunteers of Ramakrishna Mission. Swami Dharmavrathanandaji spoke on ‘Life of Holy Trio - Swami Ramkrishna Paramahamsa, Holy mother Sharada Devi and the disciple Swami Vivekananda’. He also initiated the students into the art of meditation.
Mega magician, Sri Kudroli Ganesh of international fame, spoke on ‘Power of the Subconscious Mind’ performing magic in between. The volunteers of Swacch Mangaluru gave an introduction to Ramakrishna Mission and created awareness on Pot Composting and its benefits. Prof. Chinappa Gowda, Former Registrar of Mangalore University narrated the story of Mangaluru and the significance of various art forms. Capt. Ganesh Karnik, Former MLC, GoK inspired the volunteers with his talk on ‘Role of Youth in Nation Building’. This instilled faith in volunteers and helped them to understand the nobler values of life.
Day 5: 11th January 2020
After the Yoga session, Chief Guest Prof. Dr Harsha Halahalli, Director, Curriculum Development, Nitte DU hoisted the NSS flag. He was of the opinion that NICs enable all round development of personality and are much more educative than classroom teaching. The volunteers enjoyed and explored nature’s wonder with a visit to Pilikula. The visit to the Science Centre, The Biological Park and the 3D show at the Planetarium helped them to understand science and technology, and eco-tourism in the Western Ghats and coastal Karnataka. The Artisan Village and The Guthu House was a discovery of heritage for the team. They witnessed live demonstration of pottery, blacksmithery, handloom weaving, oil extraction using bullocks and making beaten rice in the traditional way. Dr. Smitha Hegde, NUCSER delivered a talk on ‘Carbon footprint’ and created awareness about the environment.
Day 6:12th January 2020
Prof. Dr Prakash PS, Dean, K S Hegde Medical Academy hoisted the flag and appreciated the attitude and discipline of the campers. This was followed by a visit to Sasihithlu, the adopted village of Nitte DU. During the Shramadhan at Sasihithlu village, the volunteers cleaned the village roads, removed garbage heaps and created awareness on cleanliness. 12th January was celebrated as Youth Day to mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The afternoon session was a cultural extravaganza, a talent competition for the volunteers from different universities. The volunteers presented a wide range of culture, ethnicity and tradition through their performances and were judged by the program officers.
On the eve of valedictory, the ceremonial ritual of Shibira Jyothi was held after dinner. A beautiful map of India was drawn by the volunteers and diyas were kept ready for the event. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary graced the occasion. With the ceremonial presentation of Jyothi Pradhan, each volunteer placed the lighted diya along the border with loud humming of patriotic songs. The whole event was breath-taking and very poignant leaving a feeling of oneness amongst the volunteers.
Day 7: 13th January 2020
The camp concluded with the valedictory ceremony at the University Auditorium on the last day. The Chief Guest, Dr. P. S. Harsha, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru, while addressing the gathering said, “India is very rich in terms of youth power. Due to digitalization we are losing human touch which should not be allowed. With my experience of biking of more than 2.5 lakh kms, I have understood the country better. A camp like this where you get an opportunity to mingle with people across the country will give a better understanding about the country and its culture”.
The President of the function, Prof. (Dr.) M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro Chancellor, Nitte DU said, “India needs good leaders. A camp like this will erect a foundation for a future of leadership.”
The Vice Chancellor, Nitte DU Prof. (Dr.) Satheesh Kumar Bhandary and Pro Vice Chancellor, Nitte DU, Prof. (Dr.) M.S Moodithaya were also present on this occasion.
The winners of the Cultural competitions were Pre University Board, Mangaluru (I place), Pre University Board, Kerala (II place) and Kerala University (III place). Participation Certificates were also awarded to the volunteers and program officers on this occasion.
The volunteers and program officers bid goodbye with heavy hearts and promised to keep in touch after returning.
