News from MRSMEMHS | Makara Sankranti

To develop respect, appreciation and tolerance among the younger generation towards various cultures and traditions prevailing in India, the MHRD has tagged Karnataka with Uttarakhand for the year 2021 under the banner ‘Ek Bharat Shresht Bharat’.

With this motto, Makara Sankranti was celebrated at Dr. M Ramanna Shetty Memorial English Medium High School on 15th January 2021. Amalgamation of the traditional culture of Karnataka as well as that of Uttarakhand was the striking feature of the celebration.

Principal Mrs. Shreelatha Rao extended a warm welcome to the students of Classes 9 and 10 who are back in school after a long break and stressed on the purpose of this celebration. Mrs. Smitha and Mrs. Divya, teaching faculty of the school introduced the students to the customs and traditional aspects of Makara Sankranti in Karnataka and Uttarakhand respectively.

Children exchanged ‘Ellu Bella’, enjoyed Pongal and ‘Ghugute’ a sweet meat, eaten after it is fed to crows to ward off evils on this day in Uttarakhand. As an intrinsic factor of this celebration, colourful kites made by students adorned the sky.

Mrs. Usha Kerekadu compered the programme.
