The Department of Pharmacology and Student Innovation Club, NGSMIPS organized a seminar titled "Inculcating Timeless Leadership Skills: What Could IKS (Indian Knowledge System) Tell Us?" on 13th March 2025 at the University Auditorium, Paneer. Dr. Sudhir Raj, Coordinator, IKS, Nitte (DU), was the resource person.
Dr. Marina Koland, Principal, NGSMIPS welcomed the gathering, introduced the resource person and mentioned the objective of the seminar. She highlighted how the concepts found in ancient Indian scriptures, such as the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and other texts, have shaped the leaders of the past and continue to have relevance in modern times.
Dr. Sudhir Raj began his session by acknowledging the rich and diverse heritage of leadership within Indian philosophy, highlighting key principles from the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) that contribute to cultivating effective and timeless leadership skills. He emphasized the importance of self-awareness & inner strength, referencing the Bhagavad Gita, where Lord Krishna advises Arjuna to understand his strengths and weaknesses for informed decision-making. He explained how meditation & mindfulness help leaders develop clarity and resilience. Ethical leadership, rooted in the concept of Dharma, was another key aspect he discussed, stressing the importance of righteousness, truth and fairness in inspiring trust. He also underscored the role of empathy and compassion in leadership, where understanding and addressing the needs of others foster an environment of trust and mutual respect. Highlighting visionary leadership, Dr. Sudhir Raj pointed to historical figures like Emperor Ashoka, who demonstrated long-term thinking and a commitment to collective well-being. Finally, he spoke on adaptability and resilience, drawing from ancient wisdom to illustrate how effective leaders remain flexible and steadfast in the face of challenges, much like nature’s ability to balance strength and change.
Dr. C.S. Shastry commended the resource person’s insights and expanded on the concept of leadership within the context of Indian culture. He shared anecdotes from ancient Indian history that illustrated the practical applications of the timeless principles discussed by Dr. Sudhir Raj. He emphasized that while leadership today may be viewed through the lens of corporate models and Western methodologies, IKS offers a more holistic, spiritually grounded approach to leadership.
Dr. Prasanna Shama K., Head, Dept of Pharmacology, NGSMIPS delivered the vote of thanks.
