On the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, NRAM Polytechnic, Nitte in association with the Rural Police Station, Karkala organized an informative awareness session on 26th June 2025, to educate students about the growing threat of drug addiction, peddling and alcoholism while promoting preventive strategies and responsible behavior among youth. The theme for this year’s International Day is “Evidence is clear. Invest in prevention.”
To mark the occasion, a Walkathon was conducted in the morning, which saw enthusiastic participation from students & staff of the institution. Holding placards and chanting slogans like “Say No to Drugs”, “Be Smart, Don’t Start”, and “Your Life Matters – Stay Drug-Free”, the students marched through the streets of Nitte to raise awareness among the public. Sri. A Yogeesh Hegde, Director (CM&D), Nitte, also joined the Walkathon, encouraging the students and appreciating their efforts in spreading awareness to the community. A dedicated team from the Karkala Police Department took part in the main session and highlighted the serious dangers associated with drug abuse. Their direct engagement with students made the session informative and impactful. They elaborated on the emotional, physical and legal consequences of substance abuse and emphasized how these habits harm not only individuals but their families and communities as well.
The distinguished guests for the session included Dr. Harsha Priyamvada, Asst. Superintendent of Police, Karkala Sub-Division; Sri Prasanna Kumar M. S., Sub-Inspector, Karkala Rural Police Station and Sri Sundar, Sub-Inspector, Karkala Rural Police Station. Dr. Harsha Priyamvada and Sri Prasanna Kumar MS gave thought-provoking speeches about the root causes of drug abuse, how to recognize signs of addiction, the laws surrounding drug peddling and the important role students play in preventing these dangerous habits from spreading. The program was presided over by Sri Vishwanathan K, Principal, NRAM Polytechnic, Nitte. The event concluded with an interactive session, where queries were addressed by the police officers, creating a meaningful dialogue between law enforcement and youth. The combined efforts of the police, college and students made the program a great success.
