On the occasion of Autism Awareness Month 2026, an online academic session on “Dance Movement Therapy in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Neurodevelopmental Disorders” was organized by Nitte Institute of Speech & Hearing on 27th April 2026 at Chintana Hall, Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital.
The session was delivered by Dr Supritha Aithal, Senior Lecturer in Creative Arts Therapies at Edge Hill University, UK and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Dr Aithal has an interdisciplinary background in Speech-Language Pathology and dance, and her work focuses on the role of kinaesthetic and non-verbal communication in therapeutic contexts.
Dr. Aithal provided valuable insights into the principles of dance movement psychotherapy (DMP) and its application in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions. She emphasized the importance of movement as a medium for regulation, expression and communication, particularly in populations where verbal communication may be limited. The session was interactive, with active participation from students and faculty during the discussion segment. The resource person addressed queries related to clinical implementation, interdisciplinary collaboration and future directions in this area.
The session was attended by students of I, II, III BASLP & I MSc (SLP), along with faculty members.
