RARE VASCULAR SURGERY PERFORMED AT KSHEMA
A very rare vascular surgery combined with cardic bypass surgery was performed here at KSHEMA by the department of general surgery headed by Dr.K.R Bhagavan and Cardiothorosic Surgery headed by Dr.Gopalakrishnan. It is probably the first of its kind where in blood from upper limb was bypassed to both lower limb along with a coronary bypass surgery. The patient was a 60year old male,who presented to the general surgery department with pain in left lower limb and multiple ulcers over the toes. He was evaluated and found to have block in both the lower limb arteries due to which blood flow to the distal part of limb was reduced. Along with this he had block in one of the coronary blood vessel. A combined surgical approach to tackle both the problems at the same time was planned and executed by the team consisting of cardic surgeon and general surgeons. As a initial part of the plan patient underwent a coronary bypass surgery. In the same time sitting a prosthetic graft was used to bypass blood from right upper limb to both the lower limbs. The entire surgery was completed in 5 hours. In the immediate postoperative period the blood flow in the lower limb was confirmed with doppler ultrasound. The patient is now symptomatically received of his pain and able to walk without any difficulty and is ready for discharge.
