YOUTH RED CROSS UNIT
The Youth Red Cross unit of Nitte Usha Institute of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing sciences had organized Hypertension screening camp on 24-11-2011 at Deralakatte Junction. The staff co-coordinator Prof. Mrs. Philomena Fernandes, H.O.D of OBG (N) gave the key note address. Part of this programme the Youth Red cross members of our institution conducted a role play based on the theme ‘Know your Heart, by your Weight’. The role play helped to impart the knowledge to the gathered public with regard to hypertension, its causes, risk factors, clinical features, complications, and its management. At the end of the programme the participants were encouraged to check their blood pressure, height, weight and body mass index. Some of the participants those who had high B.P were referred to Justice K.S Hegde Charitable Hospital for the further diagnosis and treatment. Around 70 people were the beneficiaries of this camp.
The Youth Red Cross unit, observed World Human Rights Day on December 10 th 2011. As a part of world Human Rights day celebration, a debate competition was held on the topic “Role of students in promoting Human rights”.
The programme was conducted in seminar hall of Nitte Usha Institute of nursing sciences on 25 th November 2011.Mr. Albert D Souza (L.L.B, L.L.M) , Mrs. Kavitha (BA.L.L.B.LLM) Mrs. Shreelatha Anand (B.A,MA,MHRM) were the judges of the debate competition.
The debate competition consisted of 12 members. 6 members were against the topic and the 6 were for the topic. All the participants were enthusiastic throughout the competition. Mr. Jaise James who spoke for the human rights secured the I st prize ,and selected for the final round debate competition which held on 9 th December in Bangalore, organized by Indian Red cross Society.
The Youth Red Cross Unit of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing sciences, Mangalore conducted the video assisted programme on “First Aid” in emergency on 24th January 2012 at government primary school. Renjady. The programme began with invocation followed by the video teaching. There were altogether 90 students of 5 th.6 th and 7 th std. The representatives of the Youth Red cross unit dealt in detail various aspects of first aid in emergency like burns, snake bite, shock, drowning, fracture ,bleeding ,chemical burns, epilepsy, head injury and heart attack.
Through this students gained certain knowledge of how to save life, to prevent deterioration of the condition and further injury, to relieve pain and to make the victim comfortable etc. The students took active participation and came forward in demonstrating resuscitation, epilepsy etc. On the behalf of staff and students Mr. Hummer Kunhi, vice principal of the school thanked the Youth Red Cross unit for conducting the programme. Thus at 4 pm the programme was ended.
The Youth Red Cross Unit of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing sciences, Mangalore conducted a street play on ‘Responding to road traffic accidents’ on 5TH May 2012 near Deralakatte junction at 10.15 am. Assoc. Prof. Mrs. Philomena Fernandes Staff coordinator, Youth Red cross unit. Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing sciences present for the programme. The street play helped to impact the knowledge to the gathered public with regard to responding to road traffic accidents and first aid measures and quick shifting of casualty to the hospital by ambulance. Police sub inspectors as well as the public present appreciated the effort taken by the Youth Red cross members of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing sciences to impart knowledge regarding responding to road traffic accidents and first aid.. Programme concluded by thanking the gathering public.
