Brief report of inauguration of the forensic odontology unit & cde on “legal aspects in dental practice - ABSMIDS

The Dept of Centre for Advanced Dentofacial and Stomotognathic Sciences, Dept of Oral Medicine & Radiology, Dept of Oral Pathology & Microbiology in association with Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology K S Hegde Medical Academy and Legal Services Authority Dakshina Kannada organised the inaugural function of Forensic Odontology Unit at A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. The unit was inaugurated by Honourable Justice N Santosh Hegde, Justice of Supreme Court of India (Retd).

The inaugural ceremony was followed by CDE programme on “LEGAL ASPECTS IN DENTAL PRACTICE” organized by Department of Centre for Advanced Dentofacial And Stomatognathic Sciences in association with Legal Services Authority Dakshina Kannada at Vimasthi Bhavan, A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences Deralakatte, Mangalore.

Prof.(Dr.) U.S.KrishnaNayak, Principal and Dean welcomed the gathering and spoke on the uniqueness of Forensic Odontology. Honourable Justice N Santosh Hegde, Honourable K S Bilagi, Principal, district and sessions judge and chairman district legal services authority D.K. Mangalore addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of legal aspect in dentistry. Honourable Shri Mallana Gowda Senior civil judge and member secretary Legal Services Authority Dakshina Kannada, Mr Manoraj Rajeeva Advocate Additional District Government Pleader D.K. Mangalore, Prof (Dr) Mahabalesh Shetty Prof & Head, Department of Forensic Medicine, K.S.Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte University, Prof. (Dr.) N Sridhar Shetty, Founder Dean and Director CADSS, Prof (Dr) Mithra N Hegde, Vice principal, Prof.(Dr.)Rajendra Prasad , Director PG Studies, Dr G Subhas Babu, Dr Puspharaj Shetty and Heads of various Departments and Faculty members were present on the occasion.

Mr Manoraj Rajeeva Advocate Additional District Government Pleader D.K. Mangalore spoke on “Negligence in dental practice” and “Consumer courts and how to face legal threats in dental practice”. Prof (Dr) Mahabalesh Shetty Prof & Head, Department of Forensic Medicine, K.S.Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte University stressed on the importance of “Consent in dental practice and importance of dental records”. The session went on till 1:00 PM After the lunch there was prize distribution for the winners of the Poster and model making competition organized by the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology on 17th March 2017. This was followed by panel discussion titled “How to come out of legal hurdles and discussion of cases” which consisted of panel members Hon Shri Mallana Gowda, Prof (Dr) N Sridhar Shetty, Mr Manoraj Rajeeva, Prof (Dr) Mahabalesh Shetty and the panel discussion was moderated by Dr Suraj Shetty Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology K S Hegde Medical academy. Nearly 250 delegates from various dental and medical colleges in Karnataka and Kerala attended this useful lecture and highly inter-active panel discussion.
