News from NMAMIT | FDP on “Cyber Physical Systems”

A three-day FDP on “Cyber Physical Systems” was organised by the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering and IQAC, in association with EAC, IEEE Mangalore Subsection & IEEE Student Branch of NMAMIT from 26th to 28th September 2022. Mr. Guruprasad S, Vice President & Global Director, Bosch Global Software Technologies Pvt Ltd. Bengaluru, inaugurated the program. 

In his keynote address, Guruprasad S focused on cyber-physical systems, mainly in the healthcare sector. Dr. Poornalatha G, Chair, IEEE Mangalore Subsection, highlighted the importance of organising Faculty Development Programs to disseminate information. Convener of the program, Dr. KVSSSS Sairam, Professor & Head, Dept. of ECE, briefed about the importance of the FDP. 

In his presidential remarks, Dr. Niranjan Chiplunkar, Principal, stressed the importance of physical security systems in the present situation. Ms. Sushma PS, Assoc. Professor, introduced the chief guest. Professor Dr. KS Shivaprakasha rendered the vote of thanks. Dr. Vidya Kudva, Assoc. Professor, coordinated the program. 

On the first day of the program, Dr. Saritha Arun Kumar, EMEA Lead, Executive Security Advisor, IBM X-Force Command Center, provided insight into the challenges associated with cyber security systems through online mode. 

The second session was on “The role of IoT devices in CPS and how to secure them in the real world” by Dr. Kiran M, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Information Technology, NITK, Surathkal. He highlighted the importance of Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) as a potential alternative to secure IoT devices from a traditional computational-based approach using conventional cryptography. Dr. Gangadharan KV from the Centre for System Design, NITK, Surathkal, demonstrated the live controlling of the vibration of a fixed beam using a virtual lab platform. Dr. Pruthviraj U from the Centre for System Design explained Cyber-Physical Systems, applied to the ground control station and elevating intelligence in agriculture. In the afternoon, a hands-on session on “Connectivity Management of Sensors & IoT Devices” was handled by Mr. Tyson & team, Dept. of Information Technology, NITK, Surathkal. 

On the last day of the FDP, Mr. Sankalp Shrinand H, Technical Lead-EDAS, Mercedes Benz, Bengaluru, discussed the trends in “Autonomous Driving Technology.” He emphasized the importance of Automotive Radars, Sensors, and Camera Vision for Driving Automation. In the last session of the FDP, Mr. Sudeep from JNN College of Engineering, Shivamogga and Mr. Manish, Aviation Club, NITK, Surathkal demonstrated the construction and operational principle of drones. 

Dr. Vahid Motevalli, Director, School of Science, Engineering & Technology, Penn State Harrisburg, was the chief guest for the valedictory program. Dr. Shrividya G, Assoc. Professor welcomed the audience. Ms. Shankari N, Asst. Professor introduced the chief guest. Dr. Chiplunkar, Principal, delivered the presidential remarks. The formal program ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Durga Prasad. Dr. Anusha R, Asst. Professor, coordinated the program. 40 participants attended the FDP, including 12 participants from external institutions.
