Celebration of Tulu Dina

Tulu Dina was celebrated at Nitte DU on 2nd October 2023 through a virtual event that brought together a diverse community to honor and cherish the Tulu language and culture. The event featured insightful talks, cultural performances and significant announcements, making it a remarkable and enriching experience for all participants.

Prof. Dr. M.S. Moodithaya, Vice-Chancellor, Nitte DU, in his presidential address, eloquently conveyed that language serves as a tool to translate experiences and opinions. He went on to emphasize that a mother tongue transcends mere communication... it encapsulates emotions, reflects liveliness and behavior. He underscored the importance of fostering a deep connection, love and passion towards one's mother tongue.

Prof. Dr. Sathish Bhandary, Vice President - CRL, traced the historical significance of Tulu Dina celebrations, which originated in 1979 at Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodhana Kendra Udupi. Notably, he highlighted the recent resurgence of celebrations initiated by Nitte DU, collaborating with Manipal University and Mangalore University. This collaboration has not only rejuvenated the tradition but also expanded its reach through virtual platforms.

Mr. Ilyas Hussain, founder of Ireland Tulu Kuta, provided valuable insights into the steps taken by the organization to promote and organize Tulu events in Ireland, showcasing the global reach and interest in Tulu culture.

The virtual celebration featured cultural performances, including soulful songs by NMAMIT students and a captivating paddana by Ms. Chirashree, staff of KSHEMA. These performances added a touch of art and tradition to the event. Mr. Pradyoth Hegde, Technical Lead, Tulu Cognate Dictionary Project, presented details about the upcoming revised Tulu Cognate Dictionary, generating anticipation and excitement among participants for the upcoming publication. The event also acknowledged the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Participants collectively saluted these great leaders, connecting the celebration with broader national significance.

The masters of ceremony were three dedicated students who successfully completed the Tulu Teriyonuga Certificate Course at Nitte DU - Dr. Maithri from Maharashtra, Mr. Leenan D’Souza from Bangalore, and Mr. Pramod Chilukuri from Andhra Pradesh.

Dr. Sayeegeetha warmly welcomed the participants, setting a positive tone for the celebration. Mr. Shashikumar Shetty, Coordinator, NSS Unit, Nitte DU, delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the collective efforts that made the event a success. The celebration of Tulu Dina at Nitte DU showcased a harmonious blend of tradition, culture, and contemporary engagement, uniting people in the spirit of linguistic and cultural diversity. It served as a testament to the commitment of the community in preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Tulu language.
