News from ABSMIDS | Value-added course on ‘Safe Sedation & Emergency Management in Pediatric Dentistry'

The Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, ABSMIDS in association with the Departments of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care and Paediatrics, KS Hegde Medical Academy conducted a value-added course on ‘Safe Sedation & Emergency Management in Pediatric Dentistry' from 18th to 21st November 2024. The 32-hour course program was split into four modules comprising of lectures and hands-on training.

A total of 15 delegates, including postgraduates, professors and consultant paediatric dentists, from various parts of Karnataka, neighbouring states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh participated in the program, coordinated by Prof. (Dr) Kavita Rai, Course Coordinator.

Day 1
The course kick-started with the module on AHA certified Basic Life Support training by Prof. (Dr) Sripada Mehandale, HoD, Anaesthesiology. Dr. Shruthi K T, Asst. Coordinator, Skill Lab NU-MEDISIM, demonstrated the BLS techniques on both the adult as well as the pediatric mannequins.




Day 2
commenced with a ‘recall and road map’ session by Dr. Kavita Rai, after which the module 2 on Emergency Management in Pediatric Dental Clinic was dealt with. Dr. Murali Shankar Bhat, Dr. Rashmi Soori & Dr. Nisha Shetty from the Dept. of Anaesthesiology and Dr. Swathi Rao & Dr. Niharika Shetty from the Dept.of Paediatrics were the resource persons. The hands-on workshop on emergency equipments was conducted by Dr. Swathi Rao and workshop for emergency drugs was conducted by Dr. Niharika Shetty.

Dr. Prajna Nayak, Sr. Lecturer, Dept. of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, delivered a lecture on “Management of Local Anaesthesia Toxicity”. Dr. Swathi Rao gave a lecture on “Anaphylaxis and Bronchospasm” and Dr. Rashmi Soori on “Foreign Body Aspiration”. A hands-on training on emergency management of a pediatric patient in the dental clinic was organized. Delegates were divided into groups of five and were given emergency case scenarios wherein they had to make the correct diagnosis, formulate appropriate treatment plan and act accordingly. Dr. Gandeva Ramesh M, Asst. Professor, Anaesthesiology, demonstrated the technique of venipuncture and drug delivery by intravenous and intramuscular injections to the delegates.




Day 3 started with a lecture on “Nitrous oxide sedation” and delegates were introduced to inhalation sedation, its objectives, indications, equipments required, problems associated with sedation and sedation monitoring. Dr. Sripada Mehandale and Dr. Rashmi Soori were the resource persons. A live demonstration of nitrous oxide sedation on pediatric dental patients was carried out in the Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry under the guidance of the faculty from the Dept. of Anaesthesiology.


Module 4 on Oral sedation was covered on Day 4. Dr Meghna Bhandary, Sr. Lecturer, Dept. of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry through her lecture, introduced oral sedation to the delegates. Dr. Murali Shankar Bhat and Dr. Nisha Shetty gave lectures on indications, contradictions and commonly available drugs used in oral sedation.



A live demonstration of dental treatment on pediatric dental patient under oral Pedicloryl syrup was demonstrated in the minor OT of the Department. Prof. (Dr) Kavita Rai & Prof. (Dr) Amarshree Shetty, gave lectures on “Dental Treatment under Oral Sedation”. Prof. (Dr) Manjunath Kamath and Prof. (Dr) Sumalatha Shetty, from the Department of Anaesthesiology spoke on “IV sedation and General Anaesthesia” and “Legal considerations for sedation” respectively.



Certificates were presented to the delegates at the valedictory function. Delegates shared their experiences and gave a positive feedback.
