News from NUCSER | SDG program on Water Conservation

As a part of the Sustainable Development Goals initiative, NUCSER in collaboration with the Dept. of Horticulture, Mangaluru organised a program on ‘Water Conservation & Irrigation Practices’ at Akshaya Farm, Talapady on 23rd November 2024. The event was attended by farmers from the region, postgraduates & faculty members from NUCSER.

Mr. K Praveen, Sr. Asst. Director of Horticulture, welcomed the gathering. Prof. (Dr) Anirban Chakrabory, Director, NUCSER highlighted the significance of sustainable development initiatives by Nitte University.

Mr. K Praveen, Dr. Sajana S, Mr. Mahesh N and officials from the Dept. of Horticulture were the resource persons. The session focused on the water scarcity issues faced by local farmers, particularly due to the depletion of groundwater and the failure of wells. The resource persons explained various water conservation techniques & irrigation technologies, showcasing the successful implementation of the methods in different regions. Also, the government schemes available for irrigation were explained.

Mr. Subbanna Shetty, owner of Akshaya Farm, explained the mechanism of drip irrigation system installed at his farm. He also explained how the system works by delivering water directly to the root zones of the plants and enhanced the productivity of crops. The session concluded by answering a few doubts raised by the participants.
