News from NUCSER | Educational visit to Aquatic Biosystems

As part of their academic curriculum, the second year postgraduates of Microbiology and Biotechnology visited Aquatic Biosystems, located at Thiruvail, Vamanjooron 28th November 2024. The visit aimed to gain insights into the operations, management and breeding practices of ornamental aquarium fish. Aquatic Biosystems is renowned for its advanced aquaculture techniques, sustainable practices and contributions to the ornamental fish trade.

Dr. Ashwin Rai and Ms. Nishmitha of Aquatic Biosystems provided a detailed overview of the facility's operations. They explained fish breeding procedures, tank maintenance, technologies employed to ensure optimal conditions for both marine & freshwater species and the challenges in ornamental fish farming viz. water quality maintenance, disease management and care for delicate species. Implementing sustainable practices, such as water reuse and the use of organic feed, is essential to minimise environmental impact. The visit gave the students a deeper understanding of ornamental aquaculture’s scientific, practical, and environmental aspects. The batch consisted of 24 students, accompanied by Dr. Divyashree M. and Dr. Shubha, ensuring a productive and educational experience for all.
