The Dept. of Apparel Design & Fabrication Technology organized a seminar on ‘Sericulture - Industry of Rural India’ on 11th March 2025 to educate students about the importance of sericulture in India, its economic significance and role in providing sustainable livelihoods to rural communities. India is one of the largest producers of silk and the silk industry plays a crucial role in supporting rural economies, especially in states like Karnataka, Assam and Tamil Nadu.
The resource person Dr. I K Pai, a renowned academician & former Professor & Head, Dept. of Zoology, Goa University, began the session by explaining the fundamentals of sericulture, different types of silkworms, stages of their lifecycle and the process of silk extraction. He highlighted how sericulture provides employment opportunities to farmers, women and small-scale entrepreneurs and provided information on the government schemes and initiatives that support silk farmers and promote the growth of the industry. He discussed the role of biotechnology, advanced breeding techniques and disease-resistant silkworm varieties in enhancing silk production.
Dr. Pai highlighted the importance of research & innovation in sericulture and encouraged students to explore these areas to improve productivity and quality. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment.
