The 6 Kar Naval Subunit, NCC, NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT), Nitte, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit, organised a talk on "TB Mukt Bharat — A Step Towards a Healthier Tomorrow" on Wednesday, 30th September 2026 at NMAMIT, Nitte. The event aimed to spread awareness about tuberculosis and the Government of India's initiative to eliminate TB from the country.
Dr. Prakash Shetty, Consultant from Nitte Rural Medical and Psychiatric Centre, addressed the gathering. Information on Tuberclosis and the Prime Minister's commitment to eliminate TB from India through the TB Free India campaign was addressed during the session. He referred to the End TB Summit held in New Delhi on 13th March 2018, where India committed to eliminate TB by 2025.
Dr. Shetty presented the Global TB Report 2025 and shed light on the impact of TB in the Udupi district, highlighting the role of urban slums, overcrowded living conditions without proper ventilation and malnutrition as key contributing factors. He also spoke about public figures who have been affected by TB. In the latter part of his address, Dr. Shetty covered several important aspects including its symptoms, how it spreads, its social and economic impact, tests for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, public health action and government incentives available for TB patients.
