A rare minimally invasive chest surgery in children at K S Hegde Hospital

A rare feat of removing thymus gland by a completely thorascopic technique has been achieved by a team of doctors at K.S.HEGDE HOSPITAL Deralakatte. Thymus gland is situated in chest cavity just above the heart and large blood vessels (Aorta and Vena cava). A conventional surgery involves ‘sternotomy’ (opening of front of chest ) as for an open heart surgery. However thorascopic thymectomy involves making only 3 small (Key hole) wounds ( 5mm -10mm) through which whole surgery is done. These surgeries were done for a neurological condition called Myasthenia Gravis.Children were benefitted by a short hospital stay (3 days), minimal pain medication requirement and scarless chest. Two such cases have been done in last month by the department of Pediatric surgery headed by Dr. Sandeep Rai B & Dr. Raghu Shankar , Pediatric surgeons surgical team members . The cases were evaluated by Professor Dr. Lekha Pandit , Head of the department of Neurology and Dr. Sharik Mustafa, consultant Neurologist Dr. Sripada G.Mehandale and Dr. Nikil.M.P lead the team of Anaesthiologist .
