News from NMAMIT | NMAMIT Students contribute to Major GIS-Based Sewage Mapping Project in Mangaluru
Three students from NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT), Shresthi, Avyaya Sharma P from the Dept of Civil Engineering and Vasavi Nagaraj Joshi from the Dept of Computer & Communication Engineering along with six students from nearby engineering colleges, are contributing to an ambitious GIS-based mapping initiative aimed at transforming the management of Mangaluru’s underground drainage (UGD) network.
The Digital Cartography (DC) project currently underway, is being carried out under the guidance of AEE MN Shivalingappa, Asst. Executive Engineer, Mangalore City Corporation, and Project Manager Ananya A Bangera. The initiative is led by the Dakshina Kannada DC Office and co-organised by InUnity – Innovation for Community, CEOL, under the UDAL (Urban and District Advancement through Localising Innovations) Project.
The project seeks to digitally map the entire UGD network of Mangaluru using advanced GIS technology in combination with the QField mobile application. With participation from multiple academic institutions, the effort has already achieved notable progress by mapping over 933 manholes across Wards 37, 38 and 40 out of the planned 25,000+ in the city.
Using tools such as QField and QGIS, the student teams are collecting and georeferencing detailed attributes for each manhole -including ID, depth, diameter, structural material, condition, pipe dimensions, photographs and highly accurate GPS coordinates. This comprehensive dataset enables precise visualization of the city’s sewage network and supports interactive mapping capabilities.
Once completed, the initiative is expected to significantly enhance asset visibility, issue tracking and data-driven maintenance, while also supporting long-term urban planning in Mangaluru.
