A four day comprehensive workshop on understanding Adolescent issues and introduction to Therapeutic Counseling for teachers in Higher Education - NMAMIT

The department of Counseling, Welfare, Training & Placement, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte , the only college with a Mental Health Professional working with them for over 2 and a half decades, is organizing a four days’ workshop on ‘Introduction to Therapeutic Counselling for Teachers in Higher Education' in its Institute premises from 17th May to 20th May, 2016. It is being successfully run for the sixth year owing to the overwhelming response of colleges in the state.

The head of the department, Prof. Shalini K. Sharma says that acquainting caring teachers with the needs of adolescents, their psychology, identifying problems in them early and intervening in a sensitive and professional manner, is the most feasible, cost- effective way to maximize growth in youngsters. It invariably helps them to deal with the challenges in their personal and academic life which if ignored, would have resulted in a waste of time, money, health and life.

The need in colleges is particularly acute because of the large number of students entering it. This workshop is a proactive approach to effectively deal with student’ issues especially for teachers of higher education institutes, engineering colleges in particular who come with no training in student psychology or teaching- learning styles or common psychiatric disorders among the young people. With stress, affecting as many as 54% adolescents at any given point of time resulting in dysfunction in their personal and academic arenas, it is but essential that our teachers are empowered to deal with the adolescent under their care with the right knowledge and skills and have a reference point to seek guidance whenever they face problems.

The programme would deal with various aspects of Suicide with focus on Primary Prevention; Understanding adolescents, their Emotions & their Expectations; Relevance of Teaching – Learning styles; Academic Dysfunction; Minor & Major Psychiatric Disorders; High risk Behaviours; Commonly abused substances & Management; Hostel life & Challenges; Ragging; Counselling to disable stress; Essential qualities of a Helping Professional; Can a Teacher be a Counsellor?; Dealing with Sexual harassment in colleges; Use of Thinking skills & Energisers in classrooms; Imparting Counselling skills through practice sessions. All would be done using real case studies, demonstrations, short films, discussions, role plays and practice sessions.

The inaugural Ceremony of the workshop will be held on 17th May 2016 at 9.15 AM.

Dr. G.K. Prabhu, Director, MIT, Manipal would be the Chief Guest and Dr. Mahabaleshwara Rao, Principal, Dr TMA Pai College of Education would deliver the Keynote address.
