Annual convocation of Karnataka State Women’s University

The Annual convocation of Karnataka State Women’s University ( now called Akkamahadevi Womens University) was held on 17th April, 2017 at Vijayapura. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Director (R&D), Nitte University was the chief guest and delivered the convocation address. The other dignitaries present were the Pro chancellor of the University, Hon’ble Minister for Higher education, Government of Karnataka Shri Basavaraj Rayareddy, the Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Sabiha, members of the Syndicate and Academic Council and Registrar Prof. Sreenath

In her address, Dr. Indrani implored upon the graduating women to make a mark in the society by becoming women of substance. Empowerment through education would be the only way to address all negativities such as child marriage, abuse, dowry, female foeticide and subjugation at all levels. The country has been witnessing marked change in social and economic development with women playing a pivotal role. The recent launch of 104 satellites with several leading women scientists is a testimony for the same. Women with literary skills have taken the centre stage in the country. Several important positions such as the Chairman of State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, CEO of Biotech Industries, Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research, Vice chancellors have women at the helm of affairs. She has the honour of being nominated for 6 years as one of the 5 jury member for International Life Science prize of the UNESCO Paris and representing the Asia Pacific. Today the recognition of women is by their achievements and she is no longer called the weaker sex or considered belonging to the marginalized community. All this has been possible due to education and it should be the endeavour of each one to spread the light of knowledge and make more women literate, enabling them to stand shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts. No study area or job is considered the domain of a chosen few. Their contribution as a home maker is incomparable. Education begins at the mother’s knee and she is the first teacher. She emphasized that when you educate a woman, you educate a family, a society, a community, a nation and ultimately the human race.
