News from NIC0 | Asha Kirana – Breaking Barriers, Building Dreams

"Asha Kirana: Breaking Barriers, Building Dreams" a day-long event to spread awareness about disability inclusiveness among youth was held at Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO), on 23rd May 2024. This event, coordinated by first-year students of BA (Hons) Media and Communication, was held in collaboration with the NSS unit of NICO and Sarvamangala Trust to spread awareness about disability inclusiveness among the youth.

The program began with Dr. Anisha, the faculty coordinator, delivering the welcome address and setting a positive tone for the day. Yases Smith, one of the student coordinators serving as the Master of Ceremonies, seamlessly guided the proceedings. The keynote speaker, Ms Agneita Aiman Pengal, Assistant Professor and Psychiatric Social Worker, KSHEMA, delivered an insightful address on the mental health challenges faced by specially-abled individuals. Her presentation covered various topics, including types of disabilities, the challenges faced by specially-abled children, strategies to overcome these challenges, and how society can contribute to their well-being.

Following the keynote address, an interactive session allowed attendees to ask questions and discuss their concerns directly with the resource person. This session was particularly impactful, as it facilitated a deeper understanding of the issues at hand and provided attendees with practical solutions.

Since the representatives from Sarvamangala Trust were unable to attend, the NGO was introduced through a video, after a brief introduction by Shria Sandeep, the student coordinator. The video showcased the life story of the Founder of the Trust and highlighted the organisation's mission and achievements, emphasising their dedication to empowering people with disabilities.

A poster-making competition was also conducted, where participants were divided into three teams. Each team created posters that reflected their understanding of disability awareness and their commitment to the cause. The competition fostered creativity, teamwork, and a deeper connection to the campaign's objectives.

Overall, "Asha Kirana: Breaking Barriers, Building Dreams" event achieved its objectives of raising awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and promoting empathy and understanding among the attendees. The enthusiastic participation of students and faculty demonstrated the event's significant impact and underscored the importance of such initiatives.
