National Science Day Celebration 2017 - NUCSER

In keeping with the tradition, the staff and the students of NUCSER celebrated the National Science Day 2017 with a host of activities. Various competitions were conducted for the students of Nitte University. The activities included competitions in Photography, Spell Bee, Model Making, and General Quiz. The competitions were held on 28th February, while the formal function and the felicitation of a renowned scientist, a tradition that NUCSER follows every year, was conducted on 4th March 2017.

This year, NUCSER felicitated Dr. Sridhar Sivasubbu, Senior Scientist at CSIR-Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi, who was also the chief guest for the day. Dr. Sridhar is specialized in genetics and genomics and is one of the most reputed scientists working in this field in India. Dr. Sridhar is credited with the mapping of first-ever human genome of an Indian citizen, which was completed from his lab in 2009. His current interests are now focused on genomics of patients suffering from rare genetic disorders. It was indeed an honour and a privilege for NUCSER to have such a reputed scientist in her campus. Dr. Indrani Karunasagar, Director Research and Development, Nitte University, and Director, NUCSER, welcomed the gathering and briefed the audience about the significance of this day and urged the faculty and students to feel every day as a science day if one has to carve a career in science. The guest of honour for the day was Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, Senior Director International Relations, Technology Transfer & Patents, Nitte University, who spoke about the life of Dr. C.V. Raman and enlightened the audience about how he overcame all adversities to emerge triumphant through his discovery of the Raman Effect. He also encouraged the young scientists and the students to take a leaf out of Dr. C.V. Raman’s life to pursue scientific excellence. The Science Day Special Lecture was delivered by Dr. Sridhar where he spoke on Personal Genomes to Precision Medicines. He emphasized on how the knowledge of genetics can help people understand rare genetic disorders and also highlighted with examples from his own experiences on how the power of genetics and molecular biology can transform lives for better. At the end of the lecture, Dr. Sridhar, Dr. Iddya Karunasagar and Dr. Indrani Karunasagar gave away the prizes to the winners of the various competitions.
