The NSS Unit of Nitte (Deemed to be University) and Department of Psychiatry observed the World No Tobacco Day on 31st May 2019 at Justice K. S. Hegde Charitable Hospital.
The theme for the day was “Tobacco and Lung Health”. Dr. Satheesh Rao, Prof & HOD, Dept. of Psychiatry welcomed the guests and explained the theme. Chief Guests, Prof. (Dr) U S Krishna Nayak, Dean, ABSMIDS and Major Dr Shivakumar Hiremath, Medical Superintendent, Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, spoke on the day’s theme and said that advertising of tobacco products should be banned near schools and colleges. Prof (Dr) B Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice Chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University), in his presidential address said that observing World No Tobacco Day should not be limited to this particular day and people should take up the responsibility of spreading awareness.
Resource persons of the day, Dr Shrinivasa Bhat, Professor, Department of Psychiatry spoke on tobacco addiction; Dr. Giridhar, Prof & Head, Department of Pulmonary Medicine spoke on the harmful effects of Tobacco and Dr. Sahana Maben, Tutor and Co-ordinator of Community Dentistry, ABSMIDS, spoke on Prevention and Management of Tobacco Addiction The program concluded with a sharing of experience by members of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Dr. Shrinivasa Bhat proposed the vote of thanks. Ms. Suman Pinto, Counsellor hosted the program.
