The Youth Red Cross Unit of Nitte (Deemed to be University) organized a Webinar on Safe Management of COVID-19 Dead Body on 1st May 2020 at 11 am in the Board Room of the University. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice Chancellor NitteDU. In his opening remarks, he said that the Corona Virus pandemic has struck humanity like a thunderbolt terribly impacting lives of the people by partially paralyzing trade, economy and commerce. Schools, colleges, offices, factories have shutdown and people have been closeted between the four walls of their homes forcing them to adopt the new culture of “work from home”. He further remarked that being a health sciences, technical and research driven university, it is our responsibility to empower people with knowledge and educate them to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic effectively.
Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, Senior Director (International Relations) NitteDU was the resource person. He discussed about the various aspects of virology and the ways to prevent COVID-19 infection. Dr. Mahabalesh Shetty Prof & Head, Dept. of Forensic Medicine, Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital elaborated on the medico-legal aspects in safe handling of COVID-19 dead body.
The Chairman of the DK District Youth Red Cross Committee, C.A. Shantaram Shetty through his video message, enlightened the role of public and the need for such awareness programs. The participants clarified their doubts with the expert panel through video calling facility. A video on safe management of COVID-19 dead body, prepared by Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital was played for the participants on this occasion. The session concluded with the take home message from the chief panelist Prof. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary that, the need of the hour was not to get petrified, but to spread awareness by educating and instilling courage in the public and empowering them to face the challenge to combat the corona virus. The program was coordinated by the Youth Red Cross Nodal Officer and the program officers of all the constituent colleges of Nitte (Deemed to be University).
