The NSS Unit of Dr. NSAM PU College, Mangaluru organized an eye donation camp at the college auditorium on 18th February 2023. The chief guest of the event was Dr. Akshay Bhandary, Medical Officer at AJ Medical College, Mangaluru.
Dr. Akshay emphasized the significance of eye donation in restoring vision to the visually impaired. He explained that a single cornea could be used to restore vision of two people. He further stated that it was not possible to sell or purchase eyes in India, and eye donation could be made only by living donors. He also highlighted that people could enroll online for eye donation, which would make it easier for hospitals to identify potential donors. He added that no hospital would reject an eye donation, and it was a simple and painless procedure that takes only few minutes. During the event, it was also revealed that in India, there are currently 13 million blind people.
Principal Dr. Naveen Shetty K in his presidential address, spoke about the value of human life and emphasized that one should strive to give light to others, after one’s death. He stated that after death, our eyes usually go to waste. By donating them to those in need would give a new lease of life to the blind. He urged the audience to come forward and pledge their eyes for donation after death. Many students and staff came forward to donate their eyes and by doing so, they spread awareness about eye donation.
The program was coordinated by Mrs. Sandhya, NSS Officer and the NSS volunteers.
