The postgraduates of Nitte Institute of Communication conducted an awareness campaign on Menstrual Hygiene and Sustainability at Government College, Mudipu on 11th July 2023. The event was held in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS).
The Guest Speaker for the event was Ms. Anuradha Shetty, Asst. Professor, PG Department of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya - a woman empowerment advocate, passionate social worker and researcher.
She began the session by highlighting the changes in the adolescents and the difference between sex and gender. She then explained the menstrual cycle and importance of menstrual hygiene. She also talked about sexual health and menstrual myths and misconceptions.
The use of menstrual cups and biodegradable napkins was explained. She spoke at length about how these products are more sustainable than disposable pads and tampons. She also showed a Netflix documentary, PERIOD. The End of Sentence, which tells the story of women in rural India who fight for their right to menstrual hygiene.
The program ended with a Q&A session, where she answered questions from students. She was able to clear many misconceptions that the students had about menstruation.
The awareness campaign was successful in teaching students about menstrual hygiene and sustainability. They were grateful to the resource person for sharing her knowledge with them.
The awareness campaign was a valuable opportunity to educate students about menstrual hygiene and sustainability. The program ended with the organizers distributing posters regarding the menstrual cycle to students.
