News from NGSMIPS | Legacy of Healing: Bringing Traditional Knowledge to Modern Times

The Department of Pharmacognosy of NGSMIPS organized a seminar titled “Legacy of Healing: Bringing Traditional Knowledge to Modern Times”, on 16th January 2025 at the University Auditorium, Paneer Campus. The event brought together distinguished guests, including Prof. (Dr.) M. S. Moodithaya, Vice-Chancellor, Nitte University; Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir Raj K., Coordinator, Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems, Nitte University; Dr. Jeddu Ganapathi Bhat, Jeddu Ayurveda Speciality Hospital, Alike and three traditional medical practitioners - Shri Poovappa Emaje, Shri V. K. Ismail and Shri Ishwara Poojary. The seminar was organized to highlight the profound influence of traditional medicinal systems in shaping modern medicine. Traditional healing practices passed down through generations have contributed significantly to the discovery and development of numerous pharmaceutical drugs. The event aimed to bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary medical advancements by bringing together experts, researchers & traditional practitioners to share insights and knowledge.

Guest of Honour, Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir Raj K spoke about the need for rigorous scientific validation of traditional medicinal practices & emphasized the significance of integrating traditional healing techniques into mainstream medicine and the importance of preserving & documenting indigenous knowledge for future generations. A felicitation ceremony was conducted to honour eminent traditional medical practitioners who have dedicated their lives to healing people through indigenous methods. Shri Poovappa Emaje, renowned Nati Vaidya from Emaje, Idkidu Grama Panchayat; Shri V. K. Ismail, Nati Vaidya from Kelinja and Shri Ishwara Poojary, Nati Vaidya from Kalai, were recognized for their invaluable contributions to traditional medicine. In the interactive session held, they shared their experiences, knowledge & insights into age-old healing practices and explained the significance of herbal medicine, holistic healing approaches and the role of diet & lifestyle in maintaining health. A special lecture was delivered by Dr. Jeddu Ganapathi Bhat focussing on the relevance of Ayurveda in contemporary healthcare and the scientific principles underlying Ayurvedic treatments. He elaborated on the integration of Ayurveda with modern medical practices and how evidence-based research is strengthening its credibility. He also presented examples of standardized traditional formulations documented in ancient Ayurvedic texts. His talk provided deep insights into the therapeutic potential of traditional medicinal systems. The seminar concluded with a valedictory session, summarizing the key takeaways from the discussions.
