News from NMAMIT | Satellite Tracking Centre 'NISTANTU' inaugurated at NMAMIT

NISTANTU (Nitte Satellite Tracking and Navigational Telemetry Unit), a satellite tracking centre jointly established by the Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engineering & Dept. of E&C (Advanced Communication Technology) was inaugurated at NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte on 9th October 2026.

The centre was inaugurated by Ms. Ishita Gupta, IPS, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Karkala Sub-Division, Udupi. She encouraged the team to make effective use of satellite data and explore opportunities to take the initiative to the next level.

The technical resources for the centre were provided by Mrs. Swetha Prabakaran, founder of IRG Labs, Bengaluru, and her team. IRG Labs is a Bengaluru-based space technology startup involved in developing CubeSats, satellite payloads and ground station systems.

NISTANTU aims to provide practical exposure to satellite tracking, signal reception and data analysis, with a primary focus on receiving signals from geostationary satellites. The initiative is expected to encourage students to explore advanced applications and undertake research in wireless and satellite communication.

Geostationary satellites orbit the Earth at an altitude of approximately 36,000 km and have an orbital period matching the Earth's rotation, allowing them to appear stationary relative to a point on the Earth's surface. By aligning a dish antenna at the appropriate elevation angles and direction, signals transmitted by these satellites can be received and analysed at the centre. During the inauguration, a Korean satellite signal was successfully received as part of a demonstration.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Niranjan N. Chiplunkar, Principal of NMAMIT, emphasised the need to make the best use of the facility and expressed the expectation that the centre would progress towards conducting more advanced experiments.
