School Dental Treatment Programme report - ABSMIDS

As a part of N-SPECC program, we from the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, A. B. Shetty Institute of Dental Sciences conducted an oral health education talk on importance of oral hygiene with a hands-on demonstration of proper brushing techniques at Bala Samrakshana Kendra, Kuttar on 14.05.17 (Sunday) under the able guidance of Senior Prof. (Dr) Amitha. M. Hegde, H.O.D of the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry and Prof. (Dr) Amarshree A. Shetty.





The oral health education talk emphasized on educating and familiarizing the normal children with the problems encountered by a special child. The normal children were educated about the need for good health also highlighting the importance of proper maintenance of oral hygiene amongst special children for a good quality life which is an essential right of these lesser privileged children. The talk was followed by a free dental checkup and the kids requiring dental treatment were referred to A.B Shetty memorial institute of dental sciences. The children with special needs were identified and referred to the Nitte Special Child Care Unit for further treatment. The Nitte Special Child Care Unit is a constituent of the department of Pedodontics And Preventive Dentistry headed by Senior Prof. (Dr) Amitha. M. Hegde, H.O.D of the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry and Prof. (Dr) Amarshree A. Shetty. The N-SPECC unit comprises of the staff, post graduate students from the department of Pedodontics and interns. At N-SPECC, the children undergo a multidisciplinary approach. They are not only given dental treatment, but also undergo a general health check up by the pediatricians, who refer them to the various other departments depending upon the need of the child.

Total number of patients screened: 47 (6 special children)

Teaching staff: Senior Prof. (Dr) Amitha. M. Hegde and Prof. (Dr) Amarshree A. Shetty Postgraduates attended: Dr. Cynthia Jeyakumar, Dr. Muhammed Unais, Dr.Prachi Suman. Paramedical staff attended: Mrs. Shobha, Mr. Naveen and Mr. Melwyn.
