A one day seminar on “IPR and PATENTS” was organised by the Department of Pharmacology, NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences on 10th August, 2019 at the University Auditorium, Paneer Campus, Deralakatte, Mangalore. Prof. Dr. M. S. Moodithaya, Pro Vice-Chancellor, NitteDU inaugurated the seminar. Dr. Sharana Gowda, Asst. Controller of Patents & Designs, Patent Office, Chennai and Prof. Dr. Iddya Karunasagar, Research Director, NitteDU were the resource persons.
Introducing the resource persons, Dr. C S Shastry, Principal, NGSMIPS urged the young gathering to engage in research that is useful to society. He said it was not enough to publish papers with high impact factors but one should have the nerve and zeal to apply for patents and thus facilitate high quality research work that can be transformed into useful technology for the benefit of mankind.
Addressing the young researchers and faculty members, Dr. Moodithaya emphasized that the new academic eco-system requires every teacher to be a producer of knowledge and not just a knowledge distributor. He said, even the ranking and accreditation agencies like NIRF, NAAC, QS, etc., give lot of importance to Research & Development. Hence, all academicians should have a sound knowledge of Intellectual Property Rights and Patents. Elucidating this significant message with an escalator analogy he said: - “If you want to reach the top of an escalator which is moving downwards, you need to walk upwards faster, perhaps at double the speed of that of the escalator”.
Dr. Sharana Gouda lucidly explained the procedures and steps involved in patenting such as checking for the patentability of the invention, filing patents in India and filing in foreign jurisdictions, costs involved during the patent process, inventions not patentable in India etc. He also said that applications filed annually for patenting in India is about 50000 which is substantially lower in comparison to the applications filed in countries like US, China and Japan which range from 3 to 5 lakhs per annum.
Speaking on the topic “Resources for moving from research to technology”, Dr. Karunasagar explained about the resources, support and grants extended by Public Sector Enterprises such as Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) set up by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to strengthen and empower the emerging Biotech enterprises to undertake strategic research and innovation.
Dr. Vijay Kumar, Asst. Professor conducted the proceedings and facilitated the Q & A session. Mrs. Zeena Fernandes, Asst. Professor anchored the program and Dr. Prasanna Shama Khandige, HoD, Pharmacology proposed the vote of thanks.
