An International symposium on rare genetic disorders and bone marrow failure syndromes was organized by Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research at Nitte University on 25th October 2019. The symposium was part of a 3-year International Research Networking Project awarded to Dr Anirban Chakraborty, Deputy Director, NUCSER and Dr Anne de Paepe, Ghent University, Belgium. It is funded by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India and Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO).
The symposium was inaugurated by Shri Sanjeev K Varshney, Head, International Bilateral Cooperation Division, Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. In his address, Shri Varshney emphasised the need for such bilateral projects and their role in long-term and sustainable collaborations between participating universities. Pro-Chancellor of NitteDU, Prof. Dr. M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro Vice Chancellor of NitteDU, Prof. Dr. M.S. Moodithaya and other dignitaries of the University were present.
The symposium included talks by eminent scientists from Ghent University, Belgium and from other premiere institutes in the country. The symposium showcased the recent developments in the field of rare genetic and bone marrow disorders with a highlight on a few important ones including connective tissue disorders, eye disorders, muscle disorders and bone marrow disorders. The scientific talks included topics linked to genetic tools and techniques aimed towards diagnosis, molecular pathogenesis of these diseases in model systems, and their relevance in clinical manifestations.
Over 190 participants including postgraduate students, research scholars, clinicians and scientists from various institutes in and around Mangalore took part in the symposium.
