NUCSER conducted a unique one-day program on “Blue Biotechnology: Harnessing the social benefits from marine resources” for school children on 11th January 2025. The program was sponsored by “The Biotech Research Society, India” (BRSI) (www.brsi.in) under the scheme “Biotechnology Popularization and Skill Development” for school children. The program aimed at bridging the gap between knowledge and innovative methods of mitigating problems through novel solutions likely to emanate from the enthusiastic young in the coming decade in the field of marine biotechnology.
Prof. (Dr) Anirban Chakraborty, Director, NUCSER welcomed the gathering. The chief guest, Prof. (Dr) Suma Ballal, Dy. Registrar, Nitte (DU) addressed the young minds. The Guest of honor, Prof. (Dr) Indrani Karunasagar, Director (DST TEC & Projects), Nitte (DU), highlighted the importance of blue biotechnology in today’s context.
The students were introduced to the applications of marine biotechnology and the marine environment as a source of food, energy, medicine and mineral resources.
Besides informative lecture sessions, live demonstrations on various biotech techniques and different model systems like Zebrafish and Drosophila were conducted by NUCSER research scientists. A Quiz was conducted at the end of the workshop, and the winners were rewarded with cash prizes. Students from various schools/pre-university colleges in and around Mangalore participated in the program.
