The Department of Child Health Nursing, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences hosted an Ophthalmic camp as a part of community outreach program at Sri Ramakrishna Aided High School, Harekala, Pavoor on 15th November 2021. The screening camp began with welcome address by the Headmistress of the school. Prof. Sujatha R provided an orientation on the objective of the camp. The visual acuity and eye issues of 156 high school students were assessed with the help of a team of 2 ophthalmic PG students, 2 interns and 2 optometrists. Another team of 20 students from 3rd year B.Sc Nursing and GNM carried out tasks such as monitoring blood pressure, checking height & weight and collecting demographic data.
Prof. Sujatha R, Ms. Shivaleela Upashe, Assoc. Professor and Mrs. Jiveetha Alva, Lecturer, Dept. of Child Health Nursing coordinated the camp activities and distributed sweets and stationery kits to the children.
A total of 156 students were examined for vision and ocular disorders. 56 students with vision difficulties were directed to Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital for additional ocular inquiry and examination. Students, staff and faculty of the Child Health Nursing department, NUINS donated an amount of Rs.5000 to the Childrens’ Benevolent Fund of the school. The ophthalmic screening camp was carried out in a professional manner and was appreciated by the school authorities.
