 Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research (NUCSER) is an independent teaching cum research institute under Nitte (Deemed to be University). Established in 2013 with an aim to provide skill-based college education in basic sciences coupled with research, NUCSER is one of the most advanced and premiere institutes in this part of the country with state-of-the-art infrastructure and resources. Located in Deralakatte, Mangalore, NUCSER offers unique interdisciplinary courses that have great potential for employment in advanced research and development. The course curricula are designed to help students gain hands on skills in conventional and advanced techniques in basic science, in addition to the theoretical knowledge from highly competent faculty with expertise in diverse areas of health science research.

The institute offers one UG program and five PG programs in addition to PhDs in the faculty of Biological Sciences. The flagship UG program is BSc (Honors) Biomedical Science, an interdisciplinary program that combines the fields of biology and human health. It is a four-year program and the curriculum is designed on Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) prescribed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and in line with international trends and compliant with National Education Policy 2020 framework. The BSc (Honors) program is compatible for multiple entry/exit options with a provision for students to exit with a BSc degree after three years. The additional year (the fourth year) provides job oriented training, with opportunities for internship in industries and research organizations. The program also offers wonderful opportunities for higher education abroad that require a minimum of four year UG curriculum. Nitte is the first and the only University in Karnataka to offer this unique course, designed to provide wider career options and increased employability of the students.

The Institute offers postgraduate programs (MSc) in Biomedical Science, Food Safety & Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Marine Biotechnology, with contemporary choice-based course curricula at par with International standards. One of the unique features in the PG programs offered by NUCSER is the one-year duration of the project work that enables students carry out a meaningful research with wider applications. The availability of advanced research infrastructure allows the students to gather practical skills with expertise in various domains. The PhD program offered by the institute is much sought after and the achievements of the students in the form of fellowships, scholarships etc. are true testimonies to the support system that is available to them.

At present, the Institute has twenty eminent scientists with expertise in diverse areas of biological sciences and the research activities are divided into seven areas with an impetus on “One Health” that encompasses infectious, non-infectious and environmental factors affecting human health.

NUCSER has made a strong impact in the research footprint of the University in terms of research grants, publications and patents. The sanction of research projects by various governmental & non-governmental funding agencies, the publications of research articles in reputed scientific journals and development of a patentable technologies by the faculty are true reflections of an institute striving towards excellence in basic science teaching & research and making a mark as a premiere institute in the country.
