The Technical Club and NSS Unit of NRAM Polytechnic, organized a seminar titled “Polar Regions - Last Sentinel of Mother Earth?” on 11th March 2025 led by Dr. I K Pai, a renowned academician & former Professor & HoD of Zoology, Goa University.
Dr. Pai provided an overview of the geographical & ecological significance of the polar regions; explained how Antarctica & the Arctic play a crucial role in maintaining balance in global temperature; the rich biodiversity of these regions including unique species such as penguins, polar bears & seals and the impact of climate change on polar regions. He presented scientific data showing rising temperatures, melting ice caps and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. He explained how these changes not only affect local ecosystems but also have global consequences, such as rising sea levels and disruptions in ocean currents. One of the key highlights of the session was the discussion on how human activities contributed to polar degradation. Dr. Pai elaborated on how industrialization, carbon emissions and excessive resource exploitation are accelerating ice melt & habitat loss. He addressed the need for stronger environmental policies, international cooperation and individual efforts to combat climate change. He encouraged students to take small but impactful steps, such as reducing carbon footprints, supporting sustainable initiatives and spreading awareness about environmental conservation.
The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, where students actively participated and sought clarity on various topics related to polar research & conservation.
