NUCSER hosted an interactive session on 5th June 2026 for PhD scholars by Dr. Vinod Kumar M G, Associate Professor at the Lab of Experimental Internal Medicine, Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
Drawing from his personal, academic and professional journey, Dr. Vinod shared valuable insights into the realities of pursuing a successful research career. The session focused on the importance of perseverance, scientific curiosity and the habits that contribute to long-term research excellence. Reflecting on his journey through various research laboratories and his work in genomics, Dr. Vinod emphasized that consistency is the cornerstone of scientific success. He encouraged scholars to cultivate daily research habits, including reading scientific literature regularly, dedicating additional time to research, seeking funding through grant applications and maintaining focus despite challenges & setbacks.
One of the key messages of the session was the importance of asking the right research questions. Dr. Vinod highlighted that while mentors & supervisors can provide guidance and support, independent thinking is essential for scientific growth. “Your guide can support you, but cannot think for you,” he remarked, encouraging scholars to develop critical thinking and intellectual ownership of their research.
The session concluded with an inspiring message: “Research excellence is a habit.” He urged students to view excellence not as a single achievement but as the result of consistent effort, discipline and continuous learning. The interactive discussion that followed, allowed scholars to engage directly with Dr. Vinod, seek advice on research careers and gain practical insights into navigating the challenges of doctoral research.
