News from NSAMFGCN | An expert talk titled "Life of Butterflies"

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Cell of Nitte University in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized an expert talk titled "Life of Butterflies" on 11th August 2026 at Dr. NSAM First Grade College, Nitte. ​Aligned with SDG Goal 15 (Life on Land), the event aimed to create awareness about nature, biodiversity and ecosystem preservation under the motto, "Let's protect nature... for a sustainable future" ​Ms Sannidhi Nagaraj Geonkar, III BBA, compered the program. Dr Veena Kumari B K., Principal, welcomed the gathering.

The resource person, Mr. Sammilan Shetty, renowned conservationist, founder of Butterfly Park Belvai (est. 2011), and maker of "Life of Butterflies", India’s first comprehensive documentary on butterflies was formally introduced by Mrs. Sowmya M. J., SDG Cell Staff In-charge.

​Mr. Sammilan Shetty’s talk offered students an insightful journey into the life cycle, importance and conservation of butterflies. He explained their developmental stages from egg to caterpillar, pupa and finally the beautiful butterfly, along with unique traits such as taste receptors on their legs. He highlighted butterflies as vital pollinators and bio-indicators, while discussing threats like climate change, pesticides and habitat loss. Special emphasis was placed on protecting Western Ghats species, including the Southern Birdwing, Karnataka’s state butterfly. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, where students explored species identification and ways to create butterfly-friendly gardens.

Dr Suma Ballal, Dy. Registrar, Nitte DU commended the initiative and reiterated the institution's ongoing commitment to ecological sustainability. The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Mr Mohammed Shinan.
