NSS Dental Camp at Bantakal - ABSMIDS
The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit, Youth Red Cross wing (YRC) and the Rotaract Club of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management, Bantakal, in association with the NSS unit and Department of Public Health Dentistry of A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Deralakatte, Mangaluru, organized one-day free dental check-up camp at the institute premises on 24 April 2016.
The camp was inaugurated by Dr. Kumuda Rao, NSS officer, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology of A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Deralakatte, Mangaluru. Prof. Dr. Thirumaleshwara Bhat and Prof. Dr. A. Ganesha, Principal and Dean (Academics) of SMVITM respectively; NSS/YRC Coordinator Mr. Nagaraja Rao, Faculty Coordinators, Mr. Krishnakumar, Mr. Narayan Nayak and Ms. Reshma Hebbar; members of the NSS, YRC and Rotaract Club and student volunteers of SMVITM, as well as Dr Vinayak-department of Public Health Dentistry, interns and post-graduates of A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Deralakatte, Mangaluru were present during the inaugural function.
Around 150 people, including members of the faculty, staff and students of SMVITM and the public has availed themselves of the services provided at the camp.

Seminar on “Learn with yourself” - NUINS
Department of Psychiatric Nursing organized a seminar on “Learn with yourself” on 23-4-2016. Resource person of the day was Shree Swami Virabhadranandaji, President Ramakrishna Math, Haripad , Alleppe , Kerala.
Mrs. Nalini M Associate Professor & H.O.D Department of Psychiatric Nursing welcomed the gathering followed by elaborate talk by Shree Swami Virabhadranandaji. Swamiji emphasized in his talk on how to inculcate good moral with in an individual’s, how to control thinking, action and behavior with examples. The students actively participated and cleared the doubts with the resource person. 240 students benefitted from the programme.

Swachh Bharat Abiyana - NUINS
NSS unit of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences organized a Swachh Bharat Abiyana at Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences campus on 25-04-2016. Total 50 NSS Volunteers in different groups with one NSS programme officer actively participated in the programme. We carried out Shramadan between 3.00pm-4.00 pm. All NSS Volunteers took great initiative in cleaning the College campus. It was a good opportunity for all of them to take leadership in doing such activity.
Report on NCAEE-2016 - NMAMIT
Two days TEQUIP-2 funded Nitte Conference on Advances in Electrical Engineering (NCAEE - 2016) was organized by the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering on April 11-12, 2016 at N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology, Nitte. Theme for this ninth edition of NCAEE was “Innovative Technologies in Power and Energy systems”. The objective of the conference is to provide a platform for young researchers who are working in Electrical Science and allied disciplines to share their expertise and contribute to the development of science and technology with engineering concepts.
World health day programme and medical check up - KSHEMA
The Department of Community Medicine organized a Health Camp / Outreach Program, "world health day programme and medical check up" on 07-04-2016 at RHC Hejamadikodi.
On the occasion of World Health Day 2016, a health check up camp for students of Vidyaprasara Mandira school, Hejamadikodi was organised jointly bydepartment of community medicine KSHEMA and A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences on 7/4/2016 at Hejamadikodi rural health centre. A total of 93 children in the age group of 4 to 9 years were examined.
Dr Rahul Hegde from KSHEMA, Dr Varsha Shetty from ABSMIDS and their team of internees conducted the medical and dental check-ups.The children requiring further investigation and treatment were referred to K S Hegde Charitable Hospital.

Awareness programme on diabetes - KSHEMA
The Department of Community Medicine organized a Public Awareness Program, "AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON DIABETES" on 19-04-2016 at RHC sashihitlu.
A medical camp to give awareness on diabetes was held at seminar hall in sasihithlu health centre by Department of Community medicine K. S. Hegde medical Academy in collaboration with Sasihithlu Yuvaka Yuvathi Mandala ( R ), Navodaya Mahila Mandala ( R) on 19th April 2016 under the guidance of DR. Nanjesh (Assistant Professor, Community Medicine KSHEMA), Dr. Indushekar Shetty (MO, RHC, Sasihithlu). Mr. Ravi (Medical social worker, Department of community medicine KSHEMA) coordinated the camp with assistance from Dr. Lavena (Intern) and Mr. Dileep Karkera.
Inauguration was done by Mr. Nagesh Bangera (President Old Students Association), Mr. Raghunath Karkera (Vice President Old Students Association), Mr. Aravind Salian (Ex President Old Students Association) and Ms. Radha Salian ( Ex President Mahila Mandala). Dr Indushekar delievered a talk on the importance of Diabetes, including points on risk factors, signs and symptoms, prevention and complications, while Dr. Nanjesh spoke about diabetic diet. They presented the subject in the local language using simple words for the better understanding of the participants. Around 30 local villagers attend the function following which they opined that the programme was very useful in terms of awareness regarding diabetes.

Free Dental Camp at Udupi - ABSMIDS
The Department of Public Health Dentistry, AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences in association with Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Tecnology conducted a free dental treatment camp at Bantakal, Udupi on 24.04.2016. The team was headed by Dr. Vinayak Kamath. About 140 patients were examined and 96 patients were treated. Out of these 58 had undergone oral prophylaxis, 4 had undergone extraction and 34 had undergone restorations.

Department of Orthodontics and Department of Prosthodontics, A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences in association with Mangalore Orthodontics Study Group organized a CPD Program on “ABC OF TMD.... UNRAVEL THE MYSTERY” by renowned Clinician and Orator Dr.Moez I Khakiani, Faculty, ENCODE(Enhanced Continuing Dental Education) and Prothetic Consultant, Mumbai on Thursday, 21st April 2016. Prof.(Dr.) N Sridhar Shetty, Former Dean and Director, CADSS was the guest of honor. Prof.(Dr.) U.S.Krishna Nayak,Principal and Dean delivered the presidential address. Prof.(Dr.) Chethan Hegde, Head, Department of Prosthodontics welcomed the gathering. Dr. Akhil Shetty, Convener, Mangalore Orthodontic Study group delivered the vote of thanks. Prof.(Dr.) Mithra Hegde, Vice Principal and Prof.(Dr.) Vivek Amin, Convener, Mangalore Orthodontic Study group were also present.
The lecture on a very important and interesting topic was well attended and appreciated by more than 300 delegates including Heads of Departments, Staff, Postgraduate and Undergraduate Students of various Dental College from Calicut to Mysore and Sullia apart from Dental Colleges in Mangalore.

All India Pharmacy College Ranking by NIRF - NGSMIPS
NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences which is one of the constituent college of Nitte University has ranked 18th position among Pharmacy colleges under Category ‘A’ declared by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Government of India Pharmacy (Research and Teaching).
The ranking has been awarded from the overall recommendations arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources”, “Research and Professional Practices”, “Graduation Outcomes”, “Outreach and Inclusive” and “Perception”.

Department of Public Health Conducted observance of World Health Day 2016 with the theme ‘Beat Diabetes’ on 7th April 2016 in Bailur and Karkala Rural areas. In Bailur World Health day was observed in association with K Srinivas Hegde Memorial Health Centre and Lions Club of Neere Bailur. A Jatha was flagged off by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr.Ramananda Shetty. The Jatha consisted of students from BEM School and Government Primary School Bailur, coordinated by MPH Students. Along with Vice Chancellor Dr.Dineshchandra Hegde, Dr. Vittal Adyanthaya, Dr. Sanjay Kini, Prashant Santha and Lions Club members also participated in the Jatha. The Jatha terminated at K Srinivas Hegde Memorial Health Centre covering a distance of about one Kilometre.
Concurrently in Karkala World Health Day was observed in association with Nitte Gajria Specialty Hospital. An awareness Jatha was flagged off near Sri Venkatramana Temple by Prof Yogeesh Hegde, Registrar, NMAM Institute of Technology. Dr Jayaram Rai, Medical Director, Nitte Gajria Specialty Hospital; Dr Sudeep Kumar, Head, Dept of Public Health; Mr. MacwinD’Mello were present. The Jatha was coordinated by MPH students from Nitte University, students from Sri Venkatramana Women College and ManjunathPai Memorial Govt First Grade College Karkala.
Further to the awareness Programme, at K Srinivas Hegde Memorial Health Centre Bailur as well as at Gajria Specialty Hospital MPH students conducted Free Diabetes Screening camp using IDRS tool and random blood glucose checking. 80 subjects were screened out of which 10 were found to have higher sugar level and 70 with moderate and low risk for Diabetes. The patients with high risk were referred for further evaluation.

Oral neoplasm learning day - ABSMIDS
With an aim to encourage further interest & learning in the subject of Oral Pathology, an innovative practice of student interaction & assessment was planned by the faculty members of the Department of Oral Pathology for III BDS students. With this in view, ‘Oral neoplasm learning day’ was conducted on 16th April 2016 at Vimshathi Bhavan by the Department of Oral Pathology & Microbiology. An Inaugural address was given by Prof (Dr.) U.S Krishna Nayak, Principal & Dean, ABSMIDS. The following events were conducted for the day-
1. Case presentations:
Seven students presented cases of premalignant and malignant lesions from the department archives. Three best presentations were selected for the prize.
Winners: Nidhi Hari (1st place),Varsha Prabhu (2nd place),Vanessa Rita Fernandes (3rd place)
2. Dumb charades Two groups participated in the event where one participant from each group enacted a terminology related to Benign and Malignant tumours of the oral cavity. The team with maximum points was declared winner.
Winning group: Muhammed Safwan, Navneet Bora, Varsha Prabhu and Sunena Shetty
3. Rapid fire round
Students were selected on the basis of lucky draw and were asked 5 questions each with time allotment of 30 seconds for each question. The students who answered maximum questions were declared winners.
Winners: Shahla Hashim, Muhammad Safwan 4. Histopathology drawing competition
Interested students were asked to submit H&E diagram of ameloblastoma within the time period allotted.
The best diagram was selected for the prize.
Winners: Ekta Nayak (1st place), Betny Benny(2nd place), Reshma Nair (3rd place)
The programme was followed by prize distribution to the winners.

Ceremony of Awards for Certification in Oral Implantology - ABSMIDS
Ceremony of Awards for Certification in Oral Implantology was organized to award the 1st batch of trainees at A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences on Tuesday, 19th April, 2016. Prof.(Dr.) N Sridhar Shetty, Former Dean and Director, CADSS was the Guest of Honour. Prof.(Dr.) S Ramananda Shetty, Vice Chancellor, Nitte University awarded the certificates and delivered the presidential address. Prof.(Dr. ) U.S.Krishna Nayak, Principal and Dean, ABSMIDS motivated the Staff of Different Departments of the College to start certificate courses in their respective specialties. Prof.(Dr.) Manoj Shetty, Head, Department of Oral Implantology welcomed the gathering. The Awards Ceremony was followed by a CDE Program on “Treatment Modalities in managing peri-implantitis” of by Prof.(Dr.) Anil, Dean, Mahe Institute of Dental Sciences, Mahe. Prof.(Dr.) Anil, Alumni of AB Shetty Dental College was also felicitated. Prof.(Dr.) B Rajendra Prasad, Director, PG Studies and Prof.(Dr.) Chethan Hegde, Head, Department of Prosthodontics were also present. Prof. (Dr.) Rakshith Hegde delivered the vote of thanks. Dr.Ruchir Kalra compered the program. The program was well attended by Heads of Various Departments, Staff, Postgraduate and Undergraduate Students.
